Adding smbusers file

I would like to map several Windows 8.1 users to SMB users on my NAS4Free system. The accounts in question are Windows 8 "email" accounts (e.g., user@somedomain.com), and you can't use '@' in a unix username.
I believe this can be done by adding an smbusers file to the NAS4Free installation and adding certain config parameters to the SMB configuration page of NAS4Free's web UI.
But I'm not sure how to go about adding the smbusers file. I think simply adding an smbusers file to /etc won't work because I assume /etc is mapped to a RAM disk of some kind (at least I think that's what I see happening when NAS4Free boots; this is on an embeeded, USB-stick system).
Are there docs or a how-to that explains how to do this?
