So here is the problem, I installed nas4free ( newest version ) I mounted the drive made shares for windows and are able to see the folders on all machines. However here is the strange part when I add a file into one folder it shows up in all the folders whether. example: I have 3 folders "folder1"/"folder2"/"folder3" I place a file in folder1 it shows up in folder2 & folder3, if I delete it from folder3 it deletes from all the folders....totally stumped... any ideas.
Thanks

you created shares that point to the same directory in the filesystem

I previously used freenas and openmediavault, I set the shares up the same way. Do I need to set them up differently? If so is there a link or can you explain. Also when I set up the shares and press apply it gives me an error code (1)

please post a screen capture of how you share in SMB.
http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... smb_shares
And remember ; never share entire disk, share a folder inside your disk.
eg; if your mount point is /mnt/yourdisk, never share /mnt/yourdisk, share instead /mnt/yourdisk/Video or /mnt/yourdisk/data etc...

how do I give certain users or groups access to folders, I think it is in the file manager correct? if so how do access it? it asks for username password but the root name or password does not work.. ie user/admin - password/nas4free. Am I missing something.

ok so I mounted the drive, made directories, made shares, made groups (5) made users (5) I can access the drives from a windows machine and mount them. Here is the problem everyone can access them no matter what group they belong to. " I authenticate via active directory ". 2 users belong to MIS, 2 users belong to Parents, and 2 users belong to kids. before anyone asks: 1 user belongs to parents/MIS. I tried changing the permission using file manager , I tried with one folder -- first tried Owner RWX / group RWX other --- could not access the folder, then tried
owner RWX / group RWX / other R-- same result. then tried owner RWX / group RWX other R-X I then could access the folder. with all the users.. which is not what I want. I want only the users in that group to be able to access it and nobody else to ..what am I missing
