SMBD 100% CPU - Samba Lack Lustre Performance

Hi All,

I have setup the following hardware with N4F version;

Firmware
Version 10.2.0.2 - Prester (revision 1906)
Build date Tue Oct 13 14:11:53 CEST 2015

Hardware
HP Proliant ML115 [AMD Opteron Quad Core 64Bit]
2 x WDC WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 [Western Digital Blue 1TB in gmirror]
2 x 1GB RAM
1 x 8GB Kingston DataTraveller USB stick for System

The install went absolutely fine with no problems, in fact just as I have done the last couple of installs earlier in the year [albeit on somewhat better hardware]

The box works fine apart from file transfers / file opens / reads / directory listings etc - for example there is a directory with around 2.5GB of data mixture of files / folders. The directory listing in windows suffers from quite some delay but gets there in the end. Moving that data from a Winbox resulted in 1MB sec to the N4F - I suspect this is pretty slow and maybe indicative of a problem?

The biggest issue though, is that this box is to replace a share on a users Win7 machine which runs an accounts package. Both the program front end and the data are shared. The others pull from the share across the network. The data directory has a lot of historical data and likely needs a cleanout, its the 2.5GB referenced above. The program directory is about 200MB. Anyway the other machines [lets call them clients] just have a link to the program with a reference to the data share.

Its somewhat irksome that it all works fine [and actually quite quick] on this users Win7 box [not a massive spec machine] yet trying to replicate this [and only this] on the above hardware is so slow its unusable. I have noticed during the initial program launch smbd process gobbles 100% CPU usage and there is this big delay.

I'm not sure how to go about diagnosing this so would really appreciate any pointers!

HELP!!!

As I am short of time I tried factory reset and starting the config again. It didn't make any difference. I need to get this back by Monday so out of interest I tried installing v9.2.0.1 - Shigawire (revision 972)

Guess what? It works fine :) Also the directory listings are a lot quicker. There is some delay but nothing like with the more recent version and also not the issue with the accounts package. So, it will do the job. I'm sorry I ran out of time to look into this further.

Your speed problems are probably due to acl and extended attributes.
Read other posts here and when you have the time do the upgrade and test it again.

Will try to find the post and paste here.

I'm pretty sure turning off the extended attribs was one fo the settings I tried - not sure about the acl settings - in the end I was taking stabs in the dark prior to downgrading.
