Share Partition NoT Showing, Please Help!

I'd like to start by thanking those who respond in advance and for your time =)

I'll do my best to give as many details as briefly as possible...Here are some quick specs from the help report generator page:

NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 (revision 847) x86-liveCD; COMPAQ CPQ0968 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz 2552MiB RAM

I installed NAS4FREE on an internal SATA (1tb) hard-drive. Sorry I can't remember the exact install parameters, as it was about a year ago. In any case, I booted from a USB drive and installed NAS4FREE on the hard-drive with the option to use the remaining space as a share drive (from what I think happened, NAS4FREE created 2 partitions...a boot partition and the partition for the share drive...or maybe I'm wrong). Long-story-short, I can no longer boot from the hard-drive. I was able to boot from a fresh NAS4FREE install using USB drive and/or CD. When I go to "Manage" and add the disk, I can see the 1tb drive (but it only shows up as one drive). I can successfully add it, then mount it...but it only shows the partition that has the original NAS4FREE install (ada0), and not the share/secondary drive/partition. I can see the contents of ada0. I haven't formatted the drive or done anything do it. Is there any way can see/get/mount the contents of the share partition? There's way too much data on there that I need...Or is there anyway to restore the first partition so that it can boot again without wiping out the share partition (if it's still there)? I do have a backup of the config file from months ago, but don't really know how to restore it and am afraid to try anything at this point.

I've been searching online and the forums, but can't seem to find any solutions...If you need more info, I will do my best to give as much as you need =)

Please help!!

Hard to jugde what happened, can you post the SMART values of the drive?

You can boot the PC with e.g. UBCD:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
run Parted Magic and check the disks and see if the partitions and data are still there.

By the way, having a backup is not the worst idea.

Thanks for the response! The problem is with the internal drive which I thought had 2 partitions on it that NAS4FREE made during installation (one partition for the NAS4FREE OS, and a share partition for storage). When I boot using a fresh install of NAS4FREE from CD and add the internal hard drive, it shows up as ada0. When I mount ada0, all I can see is partition 1 (which is only like 500mb in size). So why is partition 2 not showing up in NAS4FREE? How could I access it?

I'm assuming another fix would be to somehow repair the original NAS4FREE installation on partition 1, but don't know how to do this...Also I'm afraid tampering with this might mess up everything else on the drive...Here is a screenshot of what happens when I try to boot from the hard-drive:

When I boot using a fresh install of NAS4FREE from CD and add the internal hard drive, it shows up as ada0.
So your system is booting N4F, then please post the SMART values.

You can also boot your system from the N4F LiveCD or LiveUSB and import the disks, as long as you don't format the disks or dele partitions, you won't loose data.
Btw, UBCD / Parted Magic is a rescue environment, you can use to get your data back or at least to see what might has happened to your disk.

Generally it is a bad idea to have the system and data on one disk, use the embedded install on a USB drive.
Second, you should backup the N4F configuration on a safe place outside the NAS.
Third, a data backup makes sense (I think I mentioned this before). :?

My apologies, I'll try to explain a little further. I can't get in to the web gui if I boot from the hard drive. What is shown in the screenshot is as far as I can get if I boot from the internal hard-drive. I can boot from N4F LiveCD, temporarily setup ip address to access webgui. From there, I can add and mount the internal drive (ada0), but it is only showing the first partition.

What happens when you press the import disks button?

It shows the internal hard drive as ada0. However, after I mount the drive I can only access and see the contents of partition 1 (the broken N4F installation) and is only 500mb.

This is the reason because is NOT recommended to use same disk to boot and for data.

I wish that you can recover your valuable data, when this happens, please boot from a USB ( N4F embeded ) and use entire disk for data as crowi says several times.

I totally agree. I def see that now...In the past I had misgivings about always booting from a USB because it just didn't seem right...I mean I've always been accustomed to computers booting from a local, internal hard drive...Also, I thought the data was on a separate partition so it would be safe...I really don't know why that partition is not showing up....I'll try to have the diagnostic info crowi asked for up soon.

Thanks again for everyone helping out!

OK, here is everything crowi asked for...I'm relieved to see the 2nd partition in the "Partitions" section...So now how do I access or mount it?

Nothing strange from the values, but the log would be helpful.

Try UBCD (start Parted Magic) to access your disk/partition/data

Will do. Is there a way to mount the second partition using N4F?

I wouldn't tamper too much with it.

First try to get access to your partition.
Next, back up the files if possible.
Then, you can play with it again.
