Possible Bad SATA Card

I was planning to upgrade my firmware this weekend and noticed my ZFS pool was degraded with 2 drives being unavailable. I tried doing a replace on the 2 drives, the scrub completes the pool says its good and then I reboot/import and the drives then become unavailable. They are both on the same SATA controller, which leads me to believe something is not working correctly with it. I already ordered a replacement, but are my drives bad? From the SMART report I noticed the "invalid SMART checksum" from what I could find it could be a simple firmware error fixed with a firmware update or goes away over time but its strange to happen on two drives that are on the same SATA controller and for the fact they became unavailable again after a reboot/import after showing as being online in the pool.
Any insight would be helpful. If I have to replace the drives its not the end of the world, just I dont want to have to get 8 4tb drives to give myself a worthy upgrade.
