Hello
I would have some basic questions.
I would like to build a NAS with 6 Disk.
Do the Disk need to have all the same size or could I mix 4 x 4TB and 2 x 3TB?
Do the Disk have to be from the same vendor, or it is possible to mix WD, Toshiba and Seagate?
Is there a homepage with more Information and Tutorial about ZFS?
would it be better to build a Raid Z2 oder Z1, or should I configure it another way?
bay the way
the NAS I would like to build

Re: basic questions
you can mix vendors.
however in a raid config the smallest drive determines the size of the array.
4 x 4TB and 2 x 3TB == 6x 3tb.
a guide to zfs can be found here.
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?th ... oobs.7775/
if you are buying new hardware, you should buy a mainboard with ecc support.
also in a server case a server board with ipmi is really helpfull.

Re: basic questions
How much data do you need to store?
If you put all in one pool then when you need more space simply replace the 2 x 3TB with drives larger than 4TB so on the 2nd time you need more space you would be replacing 4 x 4tb.
Of course that is assuming the drives don't fail too early

HP ML10v2 x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4150 CPU @ 3.50GHz
Extra memory so I can host a couple VMs
1) Unifi Controller on Ubuntu
2) Librenms on Ubuntu

I belive the day i would need more space i would also get new Hardware!
Another question, a system to be able to use HotSwap, would this manage the Motherboard? ;'-(
and if there is nothing written about Hotswap is the motherboard not able? like this MBD-X9SCA-B
