Importing ZFS Pool doesn't work (from FreeNAS 7)

Hi all,

i used FreeNAS 7 with ZFS (5 HDDs in Raid-Z1) so far. Because i want to upgrade my NAS i decided to change to NAS4Free. But i can't import my ZFS Pool...

I exported the ZFS Pool in FreeNAS, Installed NAS4Free (9.1.0.1.690) on the USB Drive (i made an Image of the FreeNAS installation, just for sure) and everytime I type

Code: Select all

zpool import
i get the following error message:

Code: Select all

cannot get GEOM tree: Unknown error: -1
zpool list says that there are no pools available.

I added all the neccessary drives through the Management Page (Chose ZFS as Filesystem)

i hope you can help me, i couldn't find any solution

try zpool impot -f (force import), but I do not remember to see cannot get GEOM in this forum (for a zpool import).

Better if boot from old FreeNAs 7 and do zpool history and zpool info to know how you create first time your pool.

try one more time, this time use:

Code: Select all

zpool import -d /dev -f -a
if still have errors, you need help from gurus of the forums.

I fear the worst, if you chose (Choose as ZFS Filesystem)
you had to choose "Unformatted" to leave the data in place.

no, you can choose ZFS too , to have it untouched ( I mean it when select disk, not if you format disk)

i tried the command you suggested but i get the same error message.

When i set up the ZFS Pool on FreeNAS 7 there were 5 x 1,5TB HDDs installed. Now i have 8 x 3 TB drives (new drives) on a LSI MegaRaid SAS Controller (Flashed with IT Mode Firmware) and the 5 1,5 TB drives connected to the mainbaord as i did before.

I have the following idea, to get my data from the old pool to the new one:
1) Take out 2 3 TB HDDs
2) Boot Server with working pool on FreeNAS
3) Install those 2 Drives in my PC
4) Copy the files through the network (FreeNAS cant recognize the SAS Controller) on the two 3 TB Drives
5) After that, destroy the "old" pool, and make seperate disks out of it
6) Copy the files from the 3 TB drives on the 1,5 TB Drives.
7) When finished install the two 3 TB drives back into the Server and make a raid-z1 pool out of them
8) Copy the files from the 1,5 TB Drives onto the pool.

9) When finished open up a beer and destroy something :D

Hi all,
sadly i stuck at step 7: i put the 3TB Drives back into my NAS and wanted to create a raid-z1 pool out of them. When i create a pool, it only lasts until the next reboot. After a reboot the pool is lost, an cannot be reimported, i get this error again, if i try

Code: Select all

cannot get GEOM tree: Unknown error: -1
my Harddrive-Info-page looks a bit strange too:

in the configuration utility of the controller card, i can choose between "Disabled", "OS Enabled", "BIOS Enabled" and "OS & BIOS Enabled" for "Boot configuration" or something like that (i am currently not at the server)
does this make any difference?

i flashed a firmware wihtout an configuration interface. so all HDDs are passed through automatically.
the same here, after reboot of NAS4Free the pool is dead

I think a larger issue is the fact that your disk info shows max capacity of 0 MB for every drive!!!!
