initial drive access from windows slow but data transfer ok

Post by al2lo »

hi,

basic nas4free zfs mirrored drive used for file storage.

initial drive access is always slow 5-10s to open directory. After that access is fast.

have shares cifs tested as smb and nt2 but to no avail.

system is attached on sbs domain.

any pointers welcome.

no errors noticed in log but i am a newbee to nas4free.

Also:
Slow initial drive access could mean that drives are spinning down and need a few seconds to spin up again
In Disks|Management what is the standby time for your disks?
Additionally, slow directory browsing is often reported by having Store Dos attributes checked.
Go to Services|CIFS/SMB|Settings and in Advanced Settings section see if "Store DOS attributes" is checked or not

do you read siftu recomendations?

ZFSkerntune is really recommended to install in your system.

yes read and digested.

change to max performance.

Do not have problem with performance that I can see as backups are much faster than before from server using commercial NAS.

cpu is not powerful but rarely gets warm never mind excited. seen it at 20% once.

memory never gets to filled as not much multitasking or work.

just initial drive access when tryig to open folder for first time. Seems to take an age 10-15s - tested and counted to 15!

is there any better debug or info i can supply that would be of use.

thanks

you say that disks are at always on.

But to be sure post how are your disk configured in WebGUI ( Disks|Management|Disk|Add ) :

http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... management

Please post a screen capture of both disk, and remember that disk MUST be properly config in WebGUI otherwise, can work as expected or not.

added screens of seagate disks. These are 4k disk in reality but function at much lower level as they mimic non 4k disks in software. Have read a little on this.

you write that
"system is attached on sbs domain."
does that mean the your machine is part of the nt domain?

if so have you tried the same without beeing part of the domain?

been looking at the topic and its not simple. can live with password unencrypted where it is at moment.

need to simplify this as much as possible and work out whats really ahppening.

I know the winbindd connects at some point as it gets the server usernames.
