No matter what I try I cannot put my drives in a pool, I get this error every time I try.
"Error: The changes could not be applied (error code 1)."
I have tried the steps outlined here.
http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0129
and here (# sysctl -w kern.geom.debugflags=17)
http://forums.freebsd.org/threads/zpool ... ils.17129/
and I am not having any luck at all...
I am running 9.2.0.1 - Shigawire (revision 972)

you need to remove /var/db/updatenotify.db.

I had tried that as well, I think I have found the issue, I don't know why it is an issue, but I think I have found it. If I turn off Advanced Format, any only add 1 Hot Spare to the pool (instead of the two I was trying) I can get the pool to create without (error code 1).

I had a similar issues. I wanted to create a RAIDz1 with 5xHDDS. I kept getting the (error code 1). These were Barracuda 7200 3TB drives and they support 4K format.
However I gave up on it because I needed to get the box backup and running and ended up doing hardware RAID5. I will try un-checking the "Advance Format" on my next attempt... because I will be adding another 5xHDDs for another RAIDz1(5) set.
BUT if it does correctly create the RAIDz1 on my next attempt without the Advance Format, how do I re-align the set to 4k?

I too had similar problems. I was trying to set up a 6-disk RaidZ2 pool, using 4 pre-formatted disks and 2 disks that I formatted in the NAS4Free GUI right before building the pool. Whenever I tried to load the vdev into the pool I got error code 1. After a reboot, the formatting I had just applied seemed to have not taken. I repeated this a number of times and it never took. So I used DBN to wipe the 2 that wouldn't keep their formatting, thinking that since they were previously used with windows that perhaps ZFS was reading old info. Even then, same issue. Finally in desperation, and against the warning next to the option, I selected 'force use' and hit save and apply. Next thing I knew it had worked. Go figure.
