Identify Failing Disk in ZFS Pool?

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 03:57
by molbert
I'm getting failures of backups which use my NAS4Free ZFS pool as a backup medium. The messages from the backup software imply a disk fault of some kind.

I'm currently running scrub on the pool. But I'm wondering if there are other ways of detecting a bad or failing disk that's part of a ZFS pool.

FWIW, the drives in questions are Seagates. I've had a number of problems with similar drives in the last couple of years. So it wouldn't surprise me if one of drives is failing.

How do you get to this assumption?
I don't see anything to worry about, but maybe I missed it. ;)

Of course you should post the values of all drives...

Perhaps I'm reading the results wrong. I thought all of the "pre-fail" entries in the "type" column meant the drives were borderline.

Re: Identify Failing Disk in ZFS Pool?

Okay, did some more research and see why you say there's nothing to worry about. The "type" column simply indicates how important that particular attribute is to determining the health of the drive. "Pre-fail" doesn't mean the current value means the drive is about to fail. It means that if the value drops below the threshold the drive should be considered about to fail (and that the SMART test should result in FAILED rather than PASSED).

So I wonder why I was getting what appeared to be access problems on the drive array...

the smart values look fine.

some drives have high fly values bigger than 0 that could indicate problems with vibration in the case but nothing serious.

please post the output of zpool status.

Thanx. Here's the zpool status report. FYI, I did a scrub on the pool (there's only one) yesterday and it reported no errors and had nothing to repair.

Code: Select all

 pool: Pool0
 state: ONLINE
status: The pool is formatted using a legacy on-disk format. The pool can
still be used, but some features are unavailable.
action: Upgrade the pool using 'zpool upgrade'. Once this is done, the
pool will no longer be accessible on software that does not support feature
	flags.
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 4h42m with 0 errors on Sun Feb 22 23:20:27 2015
config:

	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	Pool0 ONLINE 0 0 0
	  mirror-0 ONLINE 0 0 0

so everything looks fine.
the fault might be in the backup tool.

That's looking more likely. Thanx for your help!
