hello
tonight when i try to copy 20 movies from a location to other i got a reebootand an error :


panic: kmem_malloc(xxxxx): kmem_map too small: xxxxxxx total allcated

i have tried to reinstall with the last nas4free but no luck after restoring config, i got the same error.

only thing i can access is option 5 at boot something like a console.
please help me.i got all my life on my nas

How much free disk space?

Are you able to copy one file?

which version of nas4free are you running?
what raid configuration.
what is your hardware.

now i have latest version installed ,is working and i can acces it .The error i got it on 2 versions back .
After the error i decided to upgrade and restore configuration, after upgrade ,i can access the nas but when i restore configuration with the latest working configuration i got the same error.

i have a usb as system drive and 4 x 2TB zfs
12GB ram
2.4 quad core
i got the error when i try to copy movies from download to movie folder ,about 30 GB at once

disk space was more than half free
system drive is 8gb with 2gb swap

i cant see the log when i got the error because it does not initialize the system ,the error is in the boot process.

I found this on a freebsd forum but i do not know how to do it : "

The problem was solved by specifying the vm.kmem_size_scale=1 sysctl in the /boot/loader.conf (the default is 3). Actually it needed just several MB RAM extra, about 9MB exactly, so vm.kmem_size_scale=2 should work too."

i have imported disks the zfs is restored but i do not see any data on it is like a new drive . where is the data????

about my system ,is x64

i got it myself
i had installed again the latest version and forced zfs to load from console ,now all is back to normal .
i have restored an old config and just have to put things in order

ok after a few days i got back my nas and just a day later has crashed again with same error.
the crash append again at a file transfer when i tried to backup my jails .
WHAT IS HAPPENING ?????
i did not change any settings , just the space has got about half of his size,but problems at half of size?????

What are you zfs Kerbtune settings? The new version of nas4free requires more ram. Try the settings for 8gb and see if it happens as well.

i do not use zfs kernel tune
but i will restore the nas and install the kernel tune

now i have reinstalled the system and when i try to restore the zfs with zpool comands i get:

Are the disk all right? It would be good to se the smart status of them.

motherboard is asus p5q
the disks are ok they have been imported as zfs and status is ok

i will try to reinstall an older version and see if i can import the zpool

Very bad.
According to board specifications http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5Q/specifications/
this is a NON-ECC motherboard.
But ECC-RAM is mandatory for ZFS.

In my opinion, this wouldn't help you.
I assume your pool is damaged due to faulty RAM-Chips.
The better way is to purchase an ECC-RAM-capable System (like a HP N54L), put some extra ECC-RAM in, and restore Data from Backup.

i do not disagree but how was working about a year without problems on zfs????

and at first restore after reinstalling the system i was able to force restore the zpool ????

and now it hangs at force restore

i think maybe damaged ram could hang the process

i will read the documentation from links provided

got it working !
first clean the ram and the ram slots
second i have disconnected 1 hard drive and start my nas ,all started ok zfs report degraded
third shut down the nas and reconnect the disconnected drive
fourth started the nas ,ALL OK
after this i have installed zfskerneltune and i use 8gb settings
ALL IS OK FOR NOW

i have transferred large amount of files for testing and works ok

You can actually take backup using "Cloudbacko pro" software. I am using this osftware from long time and really satisfied using this software. It basically helps in taking backup and helps restoring too. So if you want just have a look at the software.
