Upgrading ZFS from non-ECC ram to ECC ram

I have been running my nas4free box for 3 years with non-ECC ram and have not had any issues. After reading all the info saying that is dumb and I could lose my data, I am going to be upgrading to a server mobo and ECC ram.

All my data will be backed up to some spare drives I have, but I would prefer not destroy my ZFS pool. Can I upgrade my system and keep the integrity of my current ZFS pool? Or do I have to start over because I will be using ECC ram?

Well save your config,build the new System with the disks of the old system, reinstall n4F and restore your config. Then reimport your disks. Then you should be there.....

A few weeks ago I upgraded my server, too, with different mobo, ram and cpu.
I didn't even bother to create a new stick- just saved my config.
Plugged the old stick and everything was working normally...
YMMV of course....

I did much the same when I converted from non ecc to ecc.

Most Unix based operating systems are totally not dependent on the hardware. Just put in the new motherboard and use the same USB. You may have a few minor issues;

1) Your nic will probably change. You will probably need to reassign it from the console. (Not the GUI since it has no network)

2) Your drives will probably be out of order. You can power down and re-connect the cables untill the order is correct, or you can "Clear config and reimport disks" from the GUI. You will have to turn SMART back on again for each disk if you reimport.

Just wanted to update.

Everything went fine. I use the full install on a spare HDD in the server and it booted up the first time without any issues. Now I have 32GB of ECC ram, super micro mobo, and a Xeon E3 1231.

Only thing left to do is tweak my samba share send/receive buffers.
