ZFS Scrub Repair

Hi all, I have been a long time user of FreeNAS and then NAS4Free since acquiring a HP MicroServer N36L in 2010. I originally had 2x WD20EARS purchased in 2010 in a RAID1, and then later in early 2011 I purchased another 2x WD20EARS and upped the RAM to 8GB ECC. I then put the 4 drives in a RAIDz1. Not the best I know but I have an external offline backup disk and I know RAID is not a backup.

All drives have been set to 5 minute idle timeout using the WD Tool and it has worked because my oldest drives have a Load Cycle Count of approximately 93K and my newest drives have a Load Cycle Count of just over 20K. I assume not to bad for drives which are now all over 4 years old.

Up until recently the fortnightly scrub would report no errors. Now things are starting to change but I am not sure exactly where the issues is. Is it one or more of my hard disks, or is it my RAM going bad, or is the 5 year old server on it's last legs. That is where I need your help.

The worst scrub repaired about 200MB of data, and reported CKSUM errors on /dev/ada3. That was a few weeks ago. The most recent scrubs report only a few hundred KB to a few MB. Below is the result of my last scrub:

Code: Select all

 pool: tank
 state: ONLINE
scan: scrub repaired 308K in 7h31m with 0 errors on Sat Jun 20 06:04:33 2015
config:

	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	tank ONLINE 0 0 0
	  raidz1-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada0 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada1 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada3 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors
I have pulled each drive with the server offline and ran the WD diag tools on it and they gave each drive a clean bill of health. There are no reallocated sectors, but I did notice a few hundred pending sectors on one particular drive. Below are my SMART stats for the four drives

Pending sectors and offline uncorrectable are hints for dying drives and you have quite a few of these. I would replace the drives.

Yep, the problem are the disks, not the server. They are dying. ada1 is the first to go, then probably ada3.
Buy 2 new disks, maybe 3, right now. You will probably have to replace all of them soon.
Hitachi (HGST) drives are really good. Stay a mile away from seagates.

Thanks crowi and erico.bettoni. I purchased 2x WD 4TB Reds. I had a choice of WD Green/Red/Black or Seagate drives so I chose the WD Red since they were meant to be designed for NAS use. I got caught up in the Seagate 7200.11 debacle and have avoided them since. None of my local stores had HGST in stock but from the research I did it seems they are a pretty reliable drive.

I have replaced ADA1 first. I did a scrub before doing the replace and it returned CHKSUM errors on ADA1 so erico.bettoni you were spot on for which one to replace first. It is resilvering at the moment. I now have a 6 hour wait as the volume was 3/4 full. Fingers crossed ADA3 doesn't go in the meantime as it gave CHKSUM errors before

once you have resilvered your array you should setup smart monitoring with email notification.

^^^ Don't forget to do this!
Specially usefull on raidz1.

And the WD Red are good drives. Glad you where able to replace the failing ones before your pool got compromised.

And keep an eye on ada2 ...
If pending sectors start rising, then it is the time for that drive to be replaced, too...

Got SMART monitoring email alerts setup. I had them set up before but set to once per day and not to bother if drives are powered down. Set it to 5 minute intervals if drives are not in standby. Would this have alerted me to my circumstances, even though SMART status on each drive was still showing PASS.

Also ADA2 started showing more pending sectors. It is replaced and resilvering again now. I will bite the bullet and replace the fourth WD 2TB green tomorrow so I have four healthy drives.

I understand when I replace the fourth drive, the size of the array can increase. Will this happen automatically or do I have to do something? I've read conflicting posts regarding this on the internet.

I believe mine expanded automagically when I went from 500GB to 2TB

I vaguely remember trying to use a 500GB disk but it not working due to the pool growing and refusing to shrink.

I got mine expanded, all 10TB worth now. One of my new drives might be a bit iffy though. Spin up time is quite large compared to the others. I will keep an eye on it.
