Lost ZFS pool after using WebGUI shutdown

Hi everyone.

Had to shutdown the computer to switch power outlet. After boot, the pool is not coming up.

The 4 disks are mounted inside a 8 disk cabinett utilizing port multipler over eSATA(ad0, ad1, ad2, ad3), connected to a Marvell 9123 based PCIe2 x1 card running, not utilizing any onboard RAID functions(running AHCI):

The drives are ZFS Storage pool formatted with GPT.

The computer is a HP Z800 currently equipped with 72 GB RAM and two Intel CPU X5650 with HT disabled.
Power comes from a APC Smart UPS.

NAS4Free is on a USB stick(da0). The Areca RAID Controller is for a ESXi installation, but the array is not in use on the NAS4Free boot(Areca array encrypted by the controller and there for Areca array not seen unless explicitly decrypted durring BIOS initialization). Using the Areca and da0 USB boot stick I can turn the computer to a raw NAS4Free installation or a ESXi installation, depending on what I need at the moment.

Using ZFS as a backup/archive solution for a Windows machine(running zvol over iSCSI).
The pool was a raidz1 pool. No ZFS cache or log devices.

Unable to import ZFS on disk configuration(even if pressing it one more time for it to force import).

FYI, no user data is on the drives. The zvol was currently in the process of being fully encrypted at the by DiskCryptor from Windows. And this is basically in the begining of a dry-run-test of ZFS to see if it works on NAS4Free/FreeBSD and zVolumes. I am curious of why this happend even if I paused the encryption process, unmounted the volume in DiskCryptor, logged off from the iSCSI target in Windows, used Shutdown in the WebGUI and later powered down the external drive cabinet after the computer had shutdown and the cabinett controller+HDD lights were off. The process had been going on for 1 day and 15 hours without any reported problems.

But all the drives are there, and I can not see that it would in any way swap places on 3 drives(I don't understand why the system log says "Previously was known as" several times, even after a reboot). The encryption takes approximately 2 days to finish, so I would like to try to get the pool up and running to continue from the point I paused the encryption process. Even if i restart this process from scratch, I will test so that it survives both a reboot and shutdown, as well as testing power failures and power surges, before I start to test the filesystem.

The install is brand new, but I see that a newer version is out.

Suggestions to someone not familiar with ZFS? Been using FreeNAS 0.7.x and later NAS4Free for some time both on physical hardware sharing drives over iSCSI and some virtualized using UFS on a VMWare disk, but never before tried a resilient file system on bare metal.

Forgot to mention if it's of importance:

The zvol block size is not 8k. It's 128k(had to use it). The first test showed that there was less space left in the pool compared to how much was done/remained to encrypt, so according to Google, someone found this out some years ago when using zvol and the result of the test data was that 128k blocks used storage space more efficiently.

Thanks for the quick response.

I've now read the 1st post with the 8 points where jgreco points out concerns about running FreeNAS inside a virtual machine. But I've must have missed something because I can not relate to the problem at hand I have with the ZFS pool. NAS4Free is for example able to read the SMART data from ad0, ad1, ad2 and ad3. It's running on bare metal as a embedded install booting from a USB stick.

Thanks for clarifying.
FreeNAS with hardware PCI passthrough of the storage controller (Intel VT-d) is a smart idea, as it actually addresses the three points above. However, PCI passthrough on most consumer and prosumer grade motherboards is unlikely to work reliably. VT-d for your storage controller is dangerous and risky to your pool. A few server manufacturers seem to have a handle on making this work correctly, but do NOT assume that your non-server-grade board will reliably support this (even if it appears to).
If the above quote is the one, then I can not see how it pertains to this NAS4Free install. NAS4Free on the HP Z800 is on the bare metal. Or do you suggest that the Marvell controller is being exposed to NAS4Free over Intel VT-d because the option is enabled in BIOS? My thought was that only virtualization software that are Intel VT-d aware are able to use it, and so I can not see why NAS4Free would try to virtualize anything.

I believe that either I am confused or you know more about my hardware that is not documented.

That sentence was for clarifying why there is a Areca RAID card in computer. Looks like the clarification failed it's intended purpose. Areca is for ESXi boot and d0 is for NAS4Free boot. That way I can easily choose which system to boot and because the Areca array is encrypted by Areca it's array is not visible to NAS4Free.

Either the computer is running ESXi or NAS4Free. It does not run both simultaneously on bare metal and the Areca card is not used by NAS4Free for accessing any ZFS drives(as per the rundown of what uses what and why). My question is why 3 drives after a shutdown still were identified by the Disks | Management without problems but zpool import showed them as unavailable, and what steps to take for finding the cause and get the pool up and running.

cann you try the drives on the Intel ICH8 AHCI SATA controller ?

The port multiplier support in FreeBSD for ICH10 is broken, at least in my configuration(cabinet running SATA 3.x with JMicron+FreeBSD). Have tried the internal ports before I bought a ASMedia 1061 and later Marvell 9123 based SATA controller. The ASMedia has the same problems as ICH10 on FreeBSD if the drives are connected to JMicron(SCSI timeouts, sometimes drives not seen at all). On Windows ICH10 port multiplier support is non-existent in Intels drivers but the ASMedia 1061 worked perfectly in Windows, so I've stayed with Marvell 9123 on FreeBSD because after constant transfer for almost 1.5 days @ 2-3 Gbps no SCSI command error occurred.

I've now destroyed the pool and started over. Noticed that I used the sparse volume attribute in the zvol before. This time I have not used it. Have tried the same shutdown sequence as before twice, and still OK.
