Hi (!)
Some extended web-research resulted in information on (low cost) FreeNAS 8/NAS4Free compatible SATA PCIe & PCI Hard Disk Adapters:

==============================================================================================================================================

LIST of SATA PCIe Hard Disk Adapters:

Recommendations:

*There are reported problems with the listed Silicon Image adapters - mostly in heavy I/O dependent storage environments. So, I would recommend the MARVELL 88SX7042 chipset based SATA PCIe adapter DS-30104.
*But I also have a DS-30103 SATA PCIe adapter with JMB 363 chipset, which works just fine for me, because I needed a serial PATA.

This PCI to SATA adapter works well too. In my system I was able to boot from it.

If you are doing ZFS, any commodity LSI chipped HBA will do nicely. There are rebranded HP and Dell cards all over ebay for $25-$40. You just wipe their flash, and flash them to the latest and you save 200 bucks. If you are doing UFS, any 3ware or LSI RAID card for $20 off ebay works well.
Most guys use the LSI 9211-8 for ZFS I believe. Either flashed from rebranded corporate crap or straight up. I use UFS because I can't stack RAM and CPU to infinity and beyond. My motherboard has limitations.

I'm using a cheap 2 port ASMedia ASM1061 (for about 10$ in china) and a 8 port Dell Perc H200 with the LSI 9211-8i IT firmware (for about 70$ in china).
Perc H310 is also working on NAS4Free. In both cases you will need 2 pieces of adaptor cables.

Watchout if SFF-8087 (internal) or SFF-8088 (external) is needed. I ended up in buying both because I got the wrong controller card and noticed it too late that it wasn't my fault.
