Problem installing on Thinclient
Hi there!
i have an spare Igel L100 here and since my other NAS is leeching 100 Watts from my Powerline and the Igel only need 10% of that i thougt give it a try... i installed jeoss on it but thats was just painfulkly slow!
So i Downloaded the Live-CD Image and try to get in on USB-Stick for booting... With unetbootin it boots but then says corrupt kernel image, with phydiskwrite it doesnt even write on the stick (8GB) even if the 2GB mark is removed, i try LiLo USB Creator but with this i cat no boot medium found... i cant boot over PXE and dont have a portable cd/dvd drive...
so far i could always get my usb sticks to work with the methods above, i even try dd but get the same as with LiLo.... i am using a MBR/Fat32 Stick but it just doesnt boot! anyone a idea how to get it worked? internal on the igel ther is a 1GB nand hdd, no cf card to extract on another machine, the chip is soldered to the board...
i managed to get nas4free live cd booting but strange thing is it just boots me into grub cli, if i say "boot" it says kernel has to be loaed first... but it looked different in my vm when i try first... there was straight ahead a text user interface with several options including installing...

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
You can do a Full USB install using a expecial version compiled by Alexey123, see this post: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=19
PD: can you put a link to your igel hardware?, perhaps: http://www.igel.com/products/hardware/ud2-series.html

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
You must check that your igel support i386 or amd64 set of instructions, I'm not sure , because specifications say that available Operating system is IGEL Linux.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIA_Eden
PD: What disk do you plan to use with igel?
I think that perhaps is not the best option for a NAS ( NAS = several Hard Disk = actually SATA and USB but USB not recomended).

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
via eden use x86 chipset instructions, i had run a ubuntu server (minimal) on it where i run jdownloader with minidlna, i would like to use the machine as DLNA Server that streams mostly movies to my enduser devices, jdownloader/pyLoad would be great too! i was planning to use a usb stick for nas4free and use the internal 1gb hdd as swap and make a 1tb drive my Media Partition, i was deciding for nas4free because it is so small and dont need much hardware, as i said i was using ubuntu before(Server edition) but it was very slow on fast forward (mostly because of the java for jdownloader)

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
consider this other option:
do a full install on 1GB internal disk, select 1000MB whem promt for space, Do not use swap , and use 1TB as data disk ( i asume that is USB) Format it as UFS not ZFS that earn a lot of RAM that you don´t have.
BSD is not happy with USB changes so please do not add or atach / detach USB disk disk , because BSD be fool and probably change your USB disk from ad0 to ad1 or so on
I suggest full because if you use embeded 196MB or so on of RAM must be used to load nas4free in memory to minimize writes, and if you use full install ALL RAM are disponible to use in aplications.
if you use full you can add packages like minidlna that is a good UPnP server, that works fine ( actually fuppes do not work on certain UPnP renders like SAMSUNG TV, TViX, and others), so try it and check if works for you.

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
I've had my share of usb boot troubles but when it works it is great
large size usb flash has been a boot problem for me
try a 1Gb usb stick for the boot
OR
I would look for another flash card and load it from the cd on a [full client] computer
or use the flash you have if the custom Linux is readily available to reinstall
I have always had the best luck booting from the originally intended port.

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
thanks for that input i was thinking embedded would give me more ram but this makes totally sense! again thx for the tipp with ufs!
i read about that fuppes had some issues, i will give it a try when it doesnt work i get minidlan...
... if i finally can boot this badboy! the smallest stick i have here a 2GB, i will try a different port but only have 2 usb ports

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
ok so i try with the LiveUSB from Alexey, sadly it cant boot because of not enough ram to load the image (image is about 1GB big i only got 512mb ram...
out of curiosity i made a stick with ubuntu alternate, works fine
after that i made a stick with the embedded image, boots to main menue but then says: BTX halted
so i try again with the live cd iso downloaded new and as usual no kernel image found... so it isnt a problem from the stick!
anyone any ideas?

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
with only 512 ram
you can use the embedded but not zfs
just format the storage drive UFS
I built a FreeNAS-7 with only 256 meg and it worked
[600 Mhz celeron]
and I've just test run NAS4Free embedded on 512 Meg ram
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvguvOwi ... e=youtu.be
same as the U-tube, just pulled one of the 3 SDRAM and re tested
over 256 Mb of useful ram remaining after the embedded load,
18 Mb/sec in, 20 Mb/sec out, transferring a 1.5 Gb file.
the old USB 1.0 on this board does not boot BUT on yours
if a USB boot hangs when a USB storage drive is plugged in
reverse the order of the boot and storage USB plugs
if the storage drive is polled first the boot process may hang.
I still recommend booting from the flash drive slot as the original OS did
the board in the U-tube test will only boot from the primary IDE PATA or floppy

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
UFS would be fine i just wanna store some media files there nothing important...
i am sure its possible would be sweet too but i now wanna get pyload/jdownloader with it on there so 512mb ram seems not to be enough... i tryed a old p4 machine with 2.8ghz celeron and 2gb ram where i can boot from cd... i try everything on the igel but it just doesnt boot bsd for me, i am able to boot several but not all work because the size of the harddisk or not enough ram
i installed it on a 320 GB hdd now and made in the installing screen swap and data partition but i cant use it in the webinterface, like when i try to make swap its just grey i cant even select the file option, but its the live version not the embedded...
hehe i have seen this video before
i heard alot of the power of bsd!

Re: Problem installing on Thinclient
my cold stand by N4F is a 9 YO Dell
it is a 1600 Mhz P4 with 1 Gb PC133 ram
it will only boot from the primary IDE line, flopy or "lan card" eprom
I use one of these
http://www.logicsupply.com/categories/f ... sh_modules
but a small Hdd will work too
load the embedded OS and spin it down after 5 minutes
I salvaged a 2.1 Gb Hdd from an old DDS-32 printer
