NAS4Free 10.2.0.2.2235 released (FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE-P8)

Post by zoon01 »

The NAS4Free Team is pleased to announce the release of version 10.2.0.2.2235

http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .0.2.2235/

Everyone can upgrade from NAS4Free version 9.3.0.2.1310 or Higher.

README & CHANGELOG

NAS4Free Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible!!!
=====================================================
Upgrading NAS4Free "Embedded" or "Full" from any version below 9.3.0.2.1310 by webgui or from
LiveCD/USB is problematic, due a new size of boot partition & partition layout.
Please download and save your NAS4Free config to a safe place and backup all files from second
partition if you use boot disk as data disk.
INSTALL FROM SCRATCH IS THE ONLY WAY!
After installation you can restore your config.
Sorry for inconvenience.
** ! Tools to write extracted embedded file are not supported ! **
You must use the liveusb/CD for it's first installation!!!.

Install from scratch notes
======================
** Embedded.img.xz is only for upgrades by WEBGUI, do not extract and write to any media! **

Download NAS4Free livecd or liveusb and boot from it.
The compressed LiveUSB.img.gz needs to be extracted before you can write it to usb media,
you can use it with Win32DiskImager or any other tool.
Press 9 for the install menu and perform an embedded installation.

Upgrade note:
============
You must associate CARP with physical interface explicitly after upgrading to 10.X. to 10.2.
You may need modifying your NFS and AFP share setting.
You may need modifying your ftp setting, no longer SSL is supported (only TLS).
Send Buffer Size/Receive Buffer Size in CIFS/SMB is changed to 128480 since 9.3.0.2.1375.
/var and /var/tmp size has changed.
After the upgrade please do make a new backup of your config System|Backup/Restore.

ZFS User note!
After upgrading, you must re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.

Requirements
============
Embedded: 2GB CF/USB/SSD (NAS4free "Embedded" is Recommended Install)
Full: 4GB HDD/SSD (For developers and some advanced users, Not Recommended!)
Swap less: physical memory 2GB or higher needed.
With swap: physical memory 512MB + swap 512MB (swap 1024MB recommended).

*Note: LiveCD is not supported on swap mode except installation and upgrading.

- Add accept remote syslog message.
- Add disable compress same syslog message.
Perfect.
I see you plan fail2ban and logalizer integration. Good idea.
Can you make webserver error log as different log, not use sysylog?

Hello Devs thanks for the good works as always, but there is really not much difference setting the ARC Max/Min in the loader.conf unless the "vm.kmem_size" is set, you will barely use a maximum of ~25% of the RAM no matter how much is set for the ARC MAX regardless of the RAM amount.

Personally I think this ZFS advanced settings should be performed by the user, based on the system RAM amount, or driven by an extension for the novices.

Since FreeBSD 10.x, vm.kmem_size_scale = 1.
This means kmem_size is always near equal to physical memory size.
You don't mind about kmem size.

I feel boot time or install time adjust is required for best result.

You are absolutely right, :oops:

Verified on the shell with "sysctl vm.kmem_size" and showed the below info for my 8GB server:

Code: Select all

xxx-xxxxxxx: ~# sysctl vm.kmem_size
vm.kmem_size: 8292564992
Thats about ~7.72GB for an 8GB system, I've always used 1:1 for the vm.kmem_size before, but I think the default is definitely a reasonable and fair setting.

Though I had to adjust the default ARC Max to 6144M and ARC Min to 1024M
and enabled ZFS Prefetch, looks like an install time adjust is a good idea like you said, since they will not interfere with user defined values, though setting this values during boot time can override user defined values but I could be wrong.

I can confirm a bug with the new ARC Max/Min and Prefetch settings on the System|Advanced|loader.conf, they not reflect the values on the loader.conf.local.

After struggling on why my server can't pass ~30% RAM usage even with Arc Max set to 6G, sysctl showed vfs.zfs.arc_max: 2147483648 = (2G).

I deleted them and redo the settings, then sysctl showed vfs.zfs.arc_max: 6442450944 = (6G), also values present on loader.conf.local.

I understand the problem, I sometimes experience it also. However, it is a function of MiniDLNA itself, not Nas4Free. I doubt that anything can be done to improve your situation by the Nas4Free team.

You could perhaps open a ticket over at sourceforge.

Did you enable the value before using? This is not a bug.

:shock: Damn, I think is time to visit an oculist, I didn't noticed the dark highlight on disabled parameters, nor the checkbox. :oops:

Please forget previous statements about the bug, I was thinking this settings was enabled by default, but is working as expected.

If your answer YES - put minidlna database at disk where stored your media.

I have 2 separete disk for minidlna files. But if I put database on disk with files disk want go standby. I set spindown standby disk after 20minutes idle to safe lifetime disk and powerconsumption. I thing minidlna v4 works fine without error while start playing from standby disk.
Other option is turn off disk or whole system down in night time but what is commands for it or how to achieve it? How to setup time for disk spin down or all system off in night and on morning on?

I understand your problem and I'll try to patch minidlna for standby storage use

I use a HP-GEN8 with 4GB RAM.
What are the best Settings for:

vfs.zfs.arc_max
vfs.zfs.arc_min
vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable

HAST problem with this release ?

"hastctl role init diskX" on both nodes works
"hastctl create diskX" on both nodes works
"hastctl role secondary diskX" works

# hastctl role primary disk0
# hastctl role primary disk1
# hastctl role primary disk2

Now it freeze (nothing is happened)...

In log repeat these messages:
...
hastd[5846]: [disk0] (primary) Worker process killed (pid=5939, signal=6).
hastd[5940]: [disk1] (primary) Descriptor 4 is open (socket), but should be closed.
kernel: pid 5940 (hastd), uid 0: exited on signal 6
hastd[5940]: [disk1] (primary) Aborted at function descriptors_assert, file /usr/src/sbin/hastd/hastd.c, line 303.
hastd[5846]: [disk1] (primary) Worker process killed (pid=5940, signal=6).
hastd[5941]: [disk0] (primary) Descriptor 4 is open (socket), but should be closed.
kernel: pid 5941 (hastd), uid 0: exited on signal 6
...

Similar configuration with 10.2.0.2 - Prester (revision 2067) works without problem

Some idea ?

Thanks

I make test at the same hardware with release 10.2.0.2.2223 and 10.2.0.2.2118. Problem is with releases 10.2.0.2.2235 and 10.2.0.2.2223 (both are p8). Release 10.2.0.2.2118 works OK (p7). I believe that the problem might be with build FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE-p8...

Hello trendco, Arc_Max to 3G and Arc_Min to 1G should be fine for your 4GB system, ZFS_Prefetch will be disabled by default if less than 4GB is detected unless you set it to 0 and enable the parameter, not recommended on low memory systems to avoid performance issues.

I compille minidlna with small patch, which allow wake up sleeping disks
This is files https://sites.google.com/site/aganimkar ... ects=0&d=1

Archive contain 4 files
minidlna_replace.sh

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
# REplace next line as you need
PATH_TO_SCRIPTS="/mnt/tank1/app/test"
#
/etc/rc.d/minidlna stop >/dev/null
rm -f /usr/local/sbin/minidlnad
ln -s ${PATH_TO_SCRIPTS}/minidlnad /usr/local/sbin/minidlnad
ln -s ${PATH_TO_SCRIPTS}/speedup /usr/local/etc/speedup
rconf service enable speedup
/etc/rc.d/minidlna start >/dev/null
${PATH_TO_SCRIPTS}/speedup.sh start >/dev/null
minidlnad
speedup

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
wakeup_indicator="/var/run/minidlna"
while true;
	do
		wait_on  ${wakeup_indicator}
		for i in $(sysctl -n kern.disks)
			do
				dd if=/dev/${i} of=/dev/null count=1 >> /tmp/.check.log
			done
	echo "AAA-AAA+A0GFEFED" > /dev/speaker
done
speedup.sh

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
. /etc/rc.subr

name="speedup"
rcvar="speedup_enable"

load_rc_config "$name"

speedup_enable=${speedup_enable:-"NO"}
start_postcmd="${name}_poststart"
stop_postcmd="${name}_poststop"
pidfile="/var/run/${name}.pid"
command="/usr/sbin/daemon"
command_args="-P /var/run/${name}.pid /usr/local/etc/${name} & >/dev/null"
speedup_poststart ()
{
sleep 5
ps ax | grep wait_on | grep -v grep | awk '{print $1}' >/var/run/speedup_wait.pid
}
speedup_poststop ()
{
WAITPID=`cat /var/run/speedup_wait.pid`
kill $WAITPID
rm /var/run/speedup_wait.pid
}
run_rc_command "$1"
Minidlnad - binary file with patch, you must replace original nas4free file on it
speedup - small daemon, which control /var/run/minidlna folder
speedup.sh - file for start - stop properly speedup daemon
minidlna_replace.sh - nas4free postinit script, which make all changes durinw startup.

Unzip archive, and upload files to any phisical folder ( better to data partition, for give your disks go to sleep ).
Make all files executable

Code: Select all

chmod 755 FILENAME
Into file minidlna_replace.sh adjust PATH_TO_SCRIPTS as need for your server
Add path to minidlna_replace.sh as postinit script
Image

I add to speedup file line for test

Code: Select all

echo "QWERTY" > /dev/speaker
You can comment it after test

HOW IT WORK:
When you open minidlna from TV, and navigate share for search files for play, you have beep from server. Beep says about wakeup for your all disks

Re: NAS4Free 10.2.0.2.2235 released - RSync GUI Problem?

Post by Bob22 »

Hi,

I tried to add some Modules under Services|Rsync|Server|Modules for the remote Sync from another Nas4Free Server.
The GUI accept the changes. If I push the Aply Button on the OVerview Screen it returnes with
Error: The changes could not be applied (error code 1).

In the logs I see the following:

rsyncd[20484]: rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientname.c(173) [Receiver=3.1.1]
root: /etc/rc.d/rsyncd: WARNING: failed to start rsyncd

mDNSResponderPosix: mDNS_Register_internal: ERROR!! Tried to register AuthRecord 0000000801407180 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX.in-addr.arpa. (PTR) that's already in the list
root: mdnsresponder service restarted

I have these error on an updated Server and also on a new installtion.

Any Idea?

Thanks and regards
Bob

Problem with CRON jobs.

CRON example below is not working

Code: Select all

SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
HOME=/var/log
0 0 * * * root /usr/local/bin/rsnapshot hourly 2>&1 | /usr/local/bin/rsnapreport.pl | /usr/local/bin/msmtp -C /var/etc/msmtp.conf testing@somedomain.org
When I login as root in the shell (default tcsh) and run:

Code: Select all

/usr/local/bin/rsnapshot hourly 2>&1 | /usr/local/bin/rsnapreport.pl | /usr/local/bin/msmtp -C /var/etc/msmtp.conf testing@somedomain.org
I get "Ambiguous output redirect." This is normal because of the way tcsh is redirecting stderr to stdout.

So I continued with testing.

Code: Select all

 server_n4f: etc# sh
# /usr/local/bin/rsnapshot hourly 2>&1 | /usr/local/bin/rsnapreport.pl | /usr/local/bin/msmtp -C /var/etc/msmtp.conf testing@somedomain.org
#
Changed to SH shell (because of "SHELL=/bin/sh" in CRONTAB ). When I run the command, it is working as expected.

What am I missing? I'd like to get it working from crontab.

I receive an empty e-mail.

UPDATE:
Made a script called rsnapshots_hourly_mail.sh:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/bin/rsnapshot hourly 2>&1 | /usr/local/bin/rsnapreport.pl | /usr/local/bin/msmtp -C /var/etc/msmtp.conf sideswipe@familiekrikke.nl
When I run the script form the shell (tcsh), it is working as expected. But when is run it with crontab it is not.

Code: Select all

SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
HOME=/var/log
0 0 * * * root /zssddata/scripts/rsnapshots_hourly_mail.sh

Re: NAS4Free 10.2.0.2.2235 released (FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE-P8)

Hello all,

last week I installed 2235 release - embedded on USB key. No trouble. I was using virtualbox as extra software, so I decided to switch to onboard virtualbox version. Everything was running fine, till I shutdown the server yesterday.

I am now no more able to start it!
I have a lot of error message like the following:
/etc/rc.initial: /usr/local/bin/xml: Execf format error
[: -eq: argument expected
*** Console Menu Disabled ***

I was able to get back config.xml file from my USB key, booting a 2223 release, mounting the normal key, copying the file. But the config.xml file is corrupted. So, I tried to install 2223 release onto an USB key, with success, except that restoring a previous - valid - config file causes again error message during the boot phase. Server is not starting nas4free.

I am now trying to install back a previous release. Did someone already had such issue with 2235 ? (or other release)

Edit: finally I did a fresh install of 2223, then updating config.xml manually, testing (OK), and then upgrading to 2235 with success
