Hi all,
I'm trying to turn my old Shuttle PC into a NAS4Free box. It meets all of the requirements, but I'm having an issue simply installing the software to a flash drive. Here's the info on the computer:
http://global.shuttle.com/products/prod ... ductId=254
I've got a dual core Pentium D in there, and it is capable of 64 bit processing and all of that. It's currently got 1Gb of ram in there, and I'll max it out to 2Gb if I ever get this thing running.
I get the following message upon booting from the NAS4Free CD. It appears after the boot sequence, and the window letting me boot normally, in safe mode, etc.
run_interrupt_driven_hooks: still waiting after 60 seconds for xpt_config
Doing some searching online, it seems that disabling the integrated FireWire ports through BIOS might do the trick.
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?th ... nfig.7349/
However, the BIOS does not give me that option. I've tried upgrading the BIOS, but it requires a DOS boot, and the instructions given (as minimal as they are) do not result in a bootable DOS flash drive.
So, I can't seem to install NAS or upgrade the BIOS to see if it includes a way to turn off the firewire ports (a long shot anyway).
Does anyone have any further hints as to how to get this going? I spent a good portion of the day yesterday trying all of the different settings I could find in BIOS and the DOS boot drive utility. I'm basically ready to give up and buy an off-the-shelf product, but thought I'd see if the experts here could help me out.
Thanks!
Jeremy

Re: Hang during install
You can "install" nas4free to a USB stick with any other computer (as long as it is 64bit if you want 64bit) and not even disturb the existing OS. simply boot your desktop (or laptop) from the CD, and when prompted insert the SB stick, then install to that USB stick. Now put it in the Shuttle and see if it boots. I have seen many systems that will run just fine, but hang on installs.

Interesting. I'll give it a try. I'm 95% OSX, and only use "PC"s for a few specific things. Will the N4F disc boot a MacPro?

Re: Hang during install
Hi all,
So, it seems that my MacPro is a better PC than my old PC. The Mac was able to install NAS4Free on my usb stick, but now the PC is stuck on a boot:_ prompt. I'll attach some screen shots here in case anyone has any ideas. The first will be from the Mac when it was finished installing the software on the drive. The others are various errors that the PC gave me when trying to boot.
Here's the installation screen from the Mac: And the various messages from the PC while trying to boot: Any help appreciated!
