Can't install NAS4Free 9.3 + 10.2 from liveUSB/Embedded

Post by Knappe »

used for boot from USB stick (3 pieces with USB 2 or USB3)
- NAS4Free-x64-LiveUSB-9.3.0.2.1955.img

for boot from CD
- NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.3.0.2.1955.iso
- NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-10.2.0.2.2268.iso

I never get a question for installing NAS4FREE. After BTX (v 1.02) boot procedure only menu for starting NAS4FREE normal/with AHCI activate etc. (together 6 items) appears.
At the end of the booting procedure ever the error message "can´t determine rootfs" (viewtopic.php?t=7954) appears.

I had no problems with my old MB Gigabyte GA790X-DS4 (latest running version: NAS4Free-x64-embedded-9.3.0.2.1391.img).
New MB is a Asus B150M-C D3.

Activated "verbose logging" but output very/too fast.
Could only see a message like "AHCI v 1.31. ... port multiplier not supported"

Any ideas ?

If you see this message , NAS4Free cannot mount mfsroot from your flash. Try write flash with another method

Hello, Please read this: will not boot from USB stick

Is just like dd, block for block, still no joy, get a new brand USB flash such as SanDisk.

sorry for my late reply but the mb was crashed.
Today I got a new one but the error is still present.

In order to detect the error messages during the boot process, I recorded a video.
Because no pic & video can directly posted I can only quote the end error message:
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/xmd0 []...
Creating 2nd memory disk for x64-embedded
can`t determine rootfs
Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process ´vnlru´to stop...done
Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process ´bufdaemon´ to stop...done
Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process ´synced´to stop...done
Syncing discs, nodes remaining...0 done
All buffers synced.
Uptime: 46s
...
The operating system was halted.
Please press any key to reboot.
During the booting process:
atrtc0: <AT realtime clock> port 0x70-0x77 irq 8 on acpi0
atrtc0: Warning: Could´t map I/O
isa0: <ISA bus> on isab0
pci0: <memory> at device 31.2 (no driver attached)

vga0: <Generic ISA VGA> at port 0x3c0-0x3df iomem 0x000-0xbffff on isa0
ppc0:cannot reserve I/O port range
The only additional info I found fro the "xmd" (accept above named mess):
xmd version 0.4.4. by NAS4FREE Project (experimental)
xmd: default blocklen 32KB, compression LZ4/LZ4HC, level 6
xmd0: Loaded preload cloop image </mfsroot.uzip 14197248 bytes at 0xffffffff81e
acee0 (128MB disk w/LZ4)
The "can´t determine rootfs" error occurs even when booting from a CD !

I got from another forum a hint that NAS4FREE may not deal with the new Skylake platform ?

So I found an old SAT hdd and connected it via an USB-Dock (3.0) to a Parallels VM.
Same with the ISO NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-10.2.0.2.2268.iso as VM CD-ROM.
With this Live-CD I created an "embedded" boot disk on the hdd and connected the USB-Dock to an USB 3.0-Port of the MB.
--> no boot problems, NAS4FREE started.

Using NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.3.0.2.1955.iso sometimes the boot procedure crashed as described before or (when booting) no USB-keyboard nor USB-mouse will be connected.

The reason for my problems lie with the start of the live USB version, and the exact problematics should be found with the USB 3.x access point on the Skylabe platform. Is it feasible for you to confirm and solve this problem?

I'm new to the forum. Using Nas4Free on another computer with no issues for years. However, tearing my hear out, or whats left of it, setting up a backup server for work. Having same issues as above with both ISO NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-10.2.0.2.2268.iso and ISO NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-10.3.0.3.2898.iso with "can`t determine rootfs". I don't have usb capabilities and looking to install on separate internal HD. Went with competitor due to install issues and raid crashed overnight when uploading files, so I'm back trying to get this resolved.

take out the internal HDD, install the NAS4Free system on it via another PC and plug it back in, boot and configure it.
