WARNING: failed to start smbd

/etc/rc.d/samba: WARNING: failed to start smbd

Hello

all January I had issues with my SMB/CIFS shares on our LAN. First Windows clients could partly not see Nas4Free NAS anymore or they could see but not its shares or sometimes even the shares but not open it.

At that time I could still open shares via android on Nas4Free and via my TV. Now even this does not work anymore. As far as I can tell I did not change a thing than renaming "nas4free.local" and Netbios name of SMB shares since I thought that there may be a routing/dns issue or so.

Then I read about more and more people with Windows 10 issues around Dez. 2015 / Jan 2016 and SMB 3 :(

So I started digging into that and did unnecessary changes on my windows clients like activating FastRing or disabling SMB3 ....

But now I see in Nas4Free logs this:
/etc/rc.d/samba: WARNING: failed to start smbd

WELL,
that is something. But why does that happen and how can I get rid of it?
easiest way might be to download the USB ISO again and reinstall embedded on my NAS?

normally if the service does not start its because of corrupt file system. but since you are using embedded this should not happen.
the other possibility is a corrupt config.

save your config and start from scratch.
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Bossman,

I spent now so many hours with these troubles I am willing to start from scratch.

Can you be so kind to tell me if I am right thinking that that is easy :) ?

I have a ZFS mirror pool that embeds two harddisks. Am I right thinking that I just can install fresh (embedded Nas4Free version) and than eventually when configuration my new config I can "import" my disks? Will Nas4Free recognize by itsself the content on the disks (structure/pool/filesystem) ?

Or will I have to backup (download via FTP / WINSCP all content to some client) my disks, reformat and reupload?

What is the best procedure?

thanks

yes you can just import the pool into a new setup from the sync page in zfs config.

best to get a second usb stick. if this doesnt work out you can just plug in the old stick and be back to the old state.
