Raid transfer from broken NAS to new one

Post by gabier »

hello everybody,
My NAS4Free computer was working perfectly, but nothing lasts forever, a few weeks ago it died suddenly, no way to restart or repair it. It contained a backup of several computers, on two disks in a RAID1 array.
I have now another computer available, and I plan to install in it a new NAS4Free backup server with the same organization.
Then the problem is to retrieve the data on the old disks. And the question is: can I mount the old disks on the new NAS, is there a correct way to do this, and how will the new system react ?
I have practised Freenas, and then NAS4Free for a while, but I am not at all a specialist for Linux and FreeBSD.
Any advice is welcome.

Assuming your data & OS disks are functional all you need to do is move those to the new box.

If the OS disk is damaged create a new one then restore your config file.

Hello Kenz,
My Os was an USB key NAS4Free 9.3.02. So you think that if this key and the data are OK I can insert them into the new computer and the startup would be OK also ?
I hope so because I am not sure I saved a config file for this version.
I let you Know as son as I can do the test.

Hello,
The test was successful. I inserted the disks in a test arrangement (the new computer has too big places for my WD disks, I have to find a way to insert them so that they do not move too much). I booted on the USB key with my former NAS4Free 9.3.0.2. It booted as usual, except for the network, it did not find it. It ended with the usual console menu. Using the shell interface, I could navigate to my RAID array and find my directories inside it.
Well now I have to install the network and the web interface, and also the disk drives in their final place.
I suppose I have to use the web interface to save the configuration. So I shut up the system until I am ready to set up the network and the web interface (I have to remember how this is done).
Thank you for advice.
