Upgrade from 9.3.0.2 (1213)

Post by gabier »

Hello,
I have rebuilt a new NAS (the old one died), and reinserted the old RAId successfully in the new NAS, using the original USB key with the following system
NAS4Free 9.3.0.2 (revision 1213)
Build on Sat. Dec. 20 06:14:30 CET 2014
Platform: x-86 embedded

I am not sure to understand quite well the different ways of upgrading. But I feel quite unsafe having only one USB key to rely on (one has already died in the past).
I saved the configuration but is this sufficient if the 9.3.0.2 USB key fails ?
Anyway this version is not supported any more.
If I decide to upgrade, I read the following in a fairly recent post here.

Code: Select all

NAS4Free Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible!!!
=====================================================
Upgrading NAS4Free "Embedded" or "Full" from any version below 9.3.0.2.1310 by webgui or from
LiveCD/USB is problematic, due a new size of boot partition & partition layout.
Please download and save your NAS4Free config to a safe place and backup all files from second
partition if you use boot disk as data disk.
INSTALL FROM SCRATCH IS THE ONLY WAY!
After installation you can restore your config.
Can somebody confirm that I must install the 10.2 from scratch?
An once I have a 10.2 Nas OS, what is the good way to have a backup if my USB key fails ?

save the config. that is enough.
get a good quality usb. with an embedded install they should not die.
install 10.2 on new usb stick.
restore config.
done.

save your working config in a safe place.

If your USB is bad in a few weeks or months, you experiment freezes and kernel panic, this indicate burning "cells" on your USB key and you need to do a new fresh install on a new USB key and restore config.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

well a good indication is whether the usb stick supports wear leveling.
if it doesnt. then its cheap quality.

Ok, I will try to buy a good one. Because my experience was quite unpleasant and not at all as clear cut as raulfg3 puts it. As for the "wear leveling" sorry, I am not speaking a native English, and I do not see what this means.

Use a UPS for "short period power failure" and you system will reboot few time's in year, your cheap USB can work for years ;)

Long time no see ;)

Thank you bossman,
I understand now what "wear levelling" is. Quite smart ... But how is this mechanism implemented ? is it hard-wired in the "good" key ? Or Is it in the driver and how can we be sure that the smart driver is the one used by the system ?
I will ask the question to the internet shops
