NAS4Free 10.2.0.2.2332 released (FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE-P12)

Post by zoon01 »

The NAS4Free Team is pleased to announce the release of version 10.2.0.2.2332

http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .0.2.2332/

Everyone can upgrade from NAS4Free version 9.3.0.2.1310 or Higher.

README & CHANGELOG

NAS4Free Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible!!!
=====================================================
Upgrading NAS4Free "Embedded" or "Full" from any version below 9.3.0.2.1310 by webgui or from
LiveCD/USB is problematic, due a new size of boot partition & partition layout.
Please download and save your NAS4Free config to a safe place and backup all files from second
partition if you use boot disk as data disk.
INSTALL FROM SCRATCH IS THE ONLY WAY!
After installation you can restore your config.
Sorry for inconvenience.
** ! Tools to write extracted embedded file are not supported ! **
You must use the liveusb/CD for it's first installation!!!.

Install from scratch notes
======================
** Embedded.img.xz is only for upgrades by WEBGUI, do not extract and write to any media! **

Download NAS4Free livecd or liveusb and boot from it.
The compressed LiveUSB.img.gz needs to be extracted before you can write it to usb media,
you can use it with Win32DiskImager or any other tool.
Press 9 for the install menu and perform an embedded installation.

Upgrade note:
============
You must associate CARP with physical interface explicitly after upgrading to 10.X. to 10.2.
You may need modifying your NFS and AFP share setting.
You may need modifying your ftp setting, no longer SSL is supported (only TLS).
Send Buffer Size/Receive Buffer Size in CIFS/SMB is changed to 128480 since 9.3.0.2.1375.
/var and /var/tmp size has changed.
After the upgrade please do make a new backup of your config System|Backup/Restore.

ZFS User note!
After upgrading, you must re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.

Requirements
============
Embedded: 2GB CF/USB/SSD (NAS4free "Embedded" is Recommended Install)
Full: 4GB HDD/SSD (For developers and some advanced users, Not Recommended!)
Swap less: physical memory 2GB or higher needed.
With swap: physical memory 512MB + swap 512MB (swap 1024MB recommended).

*Note: LiveCD is not supported on swap mode except installation and upgrading.

Not a problem I just learned that it's a failure in the extensions / extended gui and it's listed as not to use with the new release currently.

ATTENTION: due to massive changes in the system code of release 2327 this extension is broken, don't use it in release 2327 and above until a fix will be released!

I'll roll back to 2268 until a fix is found and implemented.

1) I like the gui changes in cron, loader.conf, rc.conf & sysctl.conf. But what's the point of the "toggle selected jobs" option? If it simply enables/disables, then why not just have that option and eliminate the two "enable" and "disable" options? It seems redundant.

2) Now, as I had requested earlier, could something similar be done to "Command Scripts"? But what would very important as well would be the ability to easily change the order of the commands. Right now, if I add a new command that must be placed before existing commands, my only option is to edit the config.xml file, and then restore/reboot with the newly revised config file.

First thanks for good response.

1) I think i do agree with you there, we still have some work todo on this, give it some time.
We also where a bit curious how the community would respond on those design changes.
For now nothing on this has been broken and finalize it will be done for next release.

2)
I note this down. let us see what we can do about this feature request for next releases.
I also like this idea, thank you!

Thanks devs for the awesome work :) , also I like the gui changes on the enable/disable features, very handy, also this is purely cosmetic, but I noticed that the storage pools name are not in bold anymore.

P.S. I upgraded and can confirm that this version is running like a charm with root on zfs(full installs).

Hi,

just installed it, so far no problems.
I like the GUI changes. Think investing some time in increasing usability and foolproofness is a very good idea and helps spreading N4F in the interested community.

Ok, then maybe it has something to do with users or permissions. I can see the shares but not browse. I will continue trying to get it work.
Google around a bit.

Thank you for your time!

There is nothing I can do yet, as I will not apply this patch.
I notice the file where they talk about is under development atm
and that they did not change this string, so I do suspect there is more going on.
Nor will I remove the CVE-2015-5299 security patch that's currently added.
We have to wait for samba 4.2.9 than, downgrade is neither an option.

Sorry

Upgrade failed for me - don't know why but would not boot.

Installed update from live USB - everything went smooth. So far everything is working well.

Well done guys, thanks.

And thank you for this new release and gui changes.

Upgraded my (not yet in production) full install from the live cd without issues. AD-enabled shares work perfectly after the upgrade also, with regards to the mentioned CIFS issues - none occurred on my install. Thanks for your continued work.

The still broken shadow copy functionality is a huge downer but I understand that it is up to the Samba people to fix and that not much can be done until they do. But, I'm glad it too is on the radar, it's a great feature.

May I ask please, is there a special reason not using the embedded version instead ?

Hmm, I tried upgrade Home server, but I have very strangle results with used extensions
1. DNSMASQ
In first , 2 libraries have anoyher name libnettle.so.4 now is libnettle.so.6 and libhogweed.so.2 now - libhogweed.so.4
But dnsmasq pkg refer to old libraries.
In second strangle repeat at prestart command
[quote]eval: xml: not found
eval: xml: not found
eval: xml: not found
eval: xml: not found[
/quote]
I check config file - it build as expected, where from faults ? -
Founded: Script need full path to xml Binary.. https://github.com/alexey1234/nas4free- ... 0c87a24639

2. TheBrig.
epair interface make this at console
Image
So after TheBrig start vnet jail not load any another extension
But vnet-enabled jail started successfull.
What changed for vnet?

Hello zoon, I'm testing your latest rev.2343 and storage pools/info shows the names in bold, and swap info is displayed correctly now, also noticed a new icons theme for the WebGUI, and there are still some parts showing the old icons.

Old Icons:

New Icons:

While I really like the old colored Icon theme, I admit that the new ones makes N4F look even sleek, keep up the good work ;)

Thanks for kind words JoseMR.
We had no time yet todo all the rest, we can't work that fast :)
But try 2344, it has some more changes.
System specs: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 -embedded on Samsung 860 EVO 256GB and Supermicro X10SL7-F w / Bios v3.2, IPMI v.03.86 / CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz - 32GB Crucial DDR3L 1600mhz ECC 1.35v , LSI 2308 on PH20.00.07.00 IT mode, Storage: 5x Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) raidz

Development system is same system in virtualbox.

Yeah, I decided to do that when I needed to manually fix the snapshot functionality with the zfsnap script. The controls in Nas4Free for snapshots are very primitive. I needed more snapshots than a daily; at the moment, I have snapshots one week back with 10-minute intervals. It's yet another line of defense against Ransomware.

I guess there may be other ways to install stuff and make it stay between reboots but going to the full install seemed the easiest.

Just to add :)
As embedded is good enough for home uses, novice users, I don't see any reason to say the contrary about Full install for advanced users, and/or fully controlled environments, also even better if N4F Full run with RootOnZFS Disk/Mirror, then will make Full installs a rock solid solution for advanced environments, I'm testing my RootOnZFS Installer(unofficial experiment) myself(on VM now), and the ZFS roll back/snapshots feature is an extra grade of protection, not to mention the benefits of the ARC and the fast reboots. ;)

Thats the beauty of NAS4Free, is adaptive and flexible.

Keep up the good work devs.

Yeah, I was actually strongly considering FreeNAS instead just because of the fact that you can boot it off a mirrored ZFS since version 9.3. Coming from the Solaris world originally, I know just how nice it can be to do system upgrades by snapshotting the entire boot environment automatically first and then applying the upgrade. Something goes wrong? Roll back, reboot. Plus of course that the loss of one drive didn't break the storage.

Thanks to ZFS the embedded approach also works, since the drives remember their own pool info and can be imported, but it's not the same. But it works pretty well for consumer level stuff and doesn't use up a SATA port on really cheapo builds so I can see the logic. :)

But there's a lot in here that needs to be beefed up from the current state. Creating datasets is missing features, the syslog daemon is ancient and completely feature free, snapshot handling as I said is useless if you want to really use that ability in ZFS to the hilt, to pick just the top issues I've encountered personally.

+1, I want to propose to add RootOnZFS as default, I understand that perhaps need more testing, but is usefull and simmilar to actual FreeNAS boot.
