Upgrade: `9.3.0.2 (1681)` => `10.2.0.2.2332`

Post by mbauhardt »

Hi,
I’m using at the moment `9.3.0.2 (1681)` and i want to update to `10.2.0.2.2332`. I have a couple of questions because i upgrade my system for the first time and i want to make sure that i’m doing the steps in the correct order.

First, general question:
Can use the WebUI to upgrade from 9.3.0.2 to 10.2.0.2? Or do i have to install 10.2.0.2 from scratch onto my current usb stick?

Second, upgrade steps:
I want todo exactly the following steps to upgrade:

1) Backup my configuration: System | Backup/Restore => Download Configuration
2) Start the upgrade: System | Firmware => Enable firmware upload => Choose File: `NAS4Free-x64-embedded-10.2.0.2.2332.img.xz`
3) After Upgrade execute the following steps in *exactly* this order
3.1) System|Backup/Restore Restore your config.
3.2) Disks|Management click on `Clear config and Import disks` to update configuration.
3.3) Disks|Management|Disk Edit re-activate S.M.A.R.T. monitoring for every device.
3.4) Re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.
3.5) Review/Modify my AFP share settings

I’m not sure about the ordering of step 3.4) vs 3.2). Is step 3.4) really necessary or is it done in step 3.2)? What happen technically in step 3.4)?
Did i miss something?

Thanks for comments and hints
Marko

NO, you can't upgrade by webgui, you need a fresh install.

steps:

1) Backup my configuration: System | Backup/Restore => Download Configuration
2)do a fresh embeded install on a new USB to use old if something fail
3.1) System|Backup/Restore Restore your config.
3.2) Disks|Management click on `Clear config and Import disks` to update configuration.
3.3) Disks|Management|Disk Edit re-activate S.M.A.R.T. monitoring for every device.
3.4) Re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.

thats all, must work

Hey,
NO, you can't upgrade by webgui, you need a fresh install.
Why i'm not able to find any hint in the official documentation that i can not upgrade fro 9.x -> 10.x via WebUI? What i found is the note about version `Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible`. But my nas4free installation is higher than 9.3.0.2.1310.

Can you point me to the docu or the reason why the upgrade is not possible via WebUI?

Thanks
Marko

from 9.3.0.2 (1681) it should be possible from the WebGUI

but consider backing up your config before and after the upgrade

My answer is because other users report issues when do a webGUI update from 9.3.x to 10.x , but is your NAS , do a backup and try it.

Ok. Make sense. I will try that out and let you know how if it was possible or not.

Did you complete the upgrade? If so, how did it go?

It looks like the upgrade went well. I uploaded the 10.2.0.2.2332 image and after some minutes the server reboot automatically. And i was able to login.

All disks and services are there like before without restoring the configuration? Anyway, i tried to upload my restored configuration but i get the error
`XML error: Not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1`. The xml file is encrypted. i'm sure that i'm using the correct password to decrypt. Hm.
So i'm confused here

1) All configuration are there without restoring my configuration
2) I'm not able to upload my configuration
3) Should i do the other steps like `clear config and import disks` and rsync ifs configuration?

thanks for comments

Hey,
I found a way to upload my encrypted configuration. Inspired from this page https://johncireland.wordpress.com/2016 ... ee-config/

I decrypt my configuration file via `openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -d -a -in <my-encrypted-config-file> -out decrypted-version.xml`
I uploaded the decrypted version. And i did the steps exactly in the order i described above.

Btw: Not sure if i did something wrong but i created an issue on sourceforge https://sourceforge.net/p/nas4free/bugs/276

So i was able to upgrade via WebUI from `9.3.0.2 (1681)` => `10.2.0.2.2332`.
My nas is now up to date :)
