Adding previously used HDD

Post by geaves »

Decided to changed my set up to Embedded from Full, backed up, installed on USB, imported backup fine no problem all works just like it says on the tin, but.....

I took an old laptop hdd connected it up to my Mint box and ran sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb ran for a few hours until complete. Connected the drive to n4f box then did disk>management>import disks and there it appears all the information >>>>filesystem Unknown or unformatted, bonus :) but then it all goes down the toilet....disks|management|hdd format>>>select but the drive is not there, it does however list 2 drives one of which belongs to a zfs pool, and the other is the usb drive I have just used.

N4F used is latest 10.2.0.2.2332, I'm obviously missing something or have not prepared the latest hdd correctly and any pointers would be appreciated.

you have to sync your zfs pool as well

Hello all,

I am in a pickle. My Buffalo Linkstation died and I cannot use the drives straight away on an other NAS box. Therefore I decided to build a modular NAS Box in order to able to substitute, repair or upgrade any components. So after much reading I decided to use N4F as my solution. The NAS will be used for my media and for my private files.

I currently Have 3 windo7 pro laptops 1 Ubuntu laptop 1 HTPC on win 10 and an old desktop on win 7 home

I plan to use the old desktop as my NAS server. It is currently built based upon a Thermaltake Armor Jr. case with a m3n78 pro mb 4gb of ram and an amd 2+ cpu. (I anticipate that my xmass present to myself will be an upgrade to the board to a supermicro x10 with 16gb ecc ram and a I5

To this machine I will ne adding a 4 bay icy dock with 4 X 1 1tb HD configured as a zfs pool called media accessible to all (these will be upgrated to 4 X 2Tb RED by Dec 2016

1 X 2TB wd red (upgraded to 6 tb) which I would configure as strip CiFS drive called backup. I would copy to this drive all my data weekly
1 500 mgb drive configured as a ZFS stripe called private to host my document.

The reason I would like to have the data copied to 2 tb drive in cif is because should my nas fail or my NAS connection to the network fails I would like to take the drive out of the hot swap bay of the NAS box I install it on the HTPC and continue to have my music playing whilst I fix the issue plaguing my NAS.

Is what I am thinking logical? I will initiate my build next week

Thank you in advance for any assistance
Server = ASUS M5A97 MB 16GB ram 13TB of WD RED running Nas4free 11.2.0.4 to mange media and documents. And it works perfectly until i screw it up LOL
