Hi all,
Been looking for a proper offsite backup solution for my valuable FreeNAS data, and I've only come across tarsnap and duplicity. Installing duplicity failed somehow, and using tarsnap seems like a much better idea. I tried to install and use BackupPC, but failed horrible!
Now, can any1 in here help me with compiling the latest TarSnap, for freenas? It's not possible to install using pkg_add -rv because of rights problems, and since we cant have ports natively installed on freenas (As far as I'm concerned, that is!), and I can't be ars** fiddling with jails and the like, I would very much appreciate it, if any1 would like to help.....
Or, in any case, which backup system do you guys use for offsite backups?
Thanks in Advance,
Gabriel Hansen

In answer to your original question, I use a couple of different simple and easy methods:
- Remove 1 drive of a SoftRAID1 pair and replace it with a fresh drive then walk out of the premises. Come back next month & swap drives again, etc.
- Have SoftRAID1 rsync to third backup drive. Remove backup drive and replace with another then walk out of the premises til next month.
- Rsync via SSH over the Internet.

Re: TarSnap/OffSite backup for FreeNAS?
Hi Al,
Thanks for your input!
Yeah, I see your point in putting private files on strangers hands, but if its encrypted and so forth, there are no probs with that imho. My point being, your own backup solution seems nice - for your particular setup!!! I dont have 3 expensive harddrives laying around for backups, and you'll still be putting those disks at 'someones premises not yours' - depending on how much real estate you got
So, simple math is: how much encrypted offsite backup can i get for the same price as having to buy enough diskspace to backup relevant files locally. In which case I'm checking out TarSnap...
I'm fiddling with installing backuppc still, but will get my grubby hands on tarsnap after this, I'll do a review! I already got a TarSnap account so I'm on my way....

Re: TarSnap/OffSite backup for FreeNAS?
After having a mini flood in my utility room where I keep my nas4free server I have gotten serious about offsite backup as well.
I am considering using rsync.net and using unison to do nightly refreshes. They are the only place I have found that offers unison and other open source backup solutions.
I really would be contempt with using something free like dropbox or Google drive however there doesn't seem to be an automated system in place to do that with nas4free ... is there?

Hi Chupa,
Regards,
Al
Those are http based services, you'd have to figure out how they work and then create your own scripts to automate them in NAS4Free.chupa wrote:there doesn't seem to be an automated system in place to do that with nas4free ... is there?
