How to replace the HDD in NAS4Free with a single drive

Post by Piet1939 »

I have a MSI WIND Nettop 120 and made a Nas from it.
There is only place for ONE hard Disk and I installed a 500-Gb HDD.
I used the embedded installation method and installed the system on a compact flash card
The current software version is: NAS4Free 10.2.0.2 (2545)

What is the right way to replace the 500-Gb HDD for a 4-TB Maxtor red HDD ?
Which steps do I have to follow ?
Please step by step because I am new in the NAS world.
I did copy already all the data to another HDD outside the NAS.

Thanks in advance

If your data is already backed up sounds like your best bet would be remove the old drives, replace with new then copy the data back.

You can use rsync to copy the data. I would say copy vs replace so you have an extra backup
11.2-RELEASE-p3 | ZFS Mirror - 2 x 8TB WD Red | 28GB ECC Ram
HP ML10v2 x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4150 CPU @ 3.50GHz

Extra memory so I can host a couple VMs
1) Unifi Controller on Ubuntu
2) Librenms on Ubuntu

I took the old drive out and replaced it for the new one, but it still shows the old drive.
I tried to remove the old one (mouse click on X) but than the status shows that it is busy to remove the drive but nothing happens.
I also clicked on 'Apply changes"
I removed the drive complete and boot the NAS again, but ihe info of the old drive is still there.
I emptied the config an imported disks as advised, it boot again but still the same.
All the time the capacity in the HDD Manager stays 500Gb instead of 4TB and the old model name is still from the old drive.
What do I wrong ?
How do I get the new drive recognized bij NAS4Free ?

Or do I have to do a complete new installation ?
I hoped that I could use the embedded installation on the SD card, but it look rather difficult to install a new drive in my system.

Does somebody have a good advice ?
Thanks in advance

I did not get any advice so I decided to do a new installation.
I did follow the guid : INSTALLING and Configuring NAS4Free on a Windows Network.
But I I can not complete the installation
I did install everything till "The next step in the process is to create the folder directories for our users" without problems.
But than the (my) problem started.
Here is a part of the installation guide:

The next step in the process is to create the folder directories for our users.
Note that this is NOT the shares themselves but just the folders.
Head over to “Advanced –> File Manager “ and login if you see the prompt.
Here you see a visual listing of the folder structure on Your NAS box.
click on … beside File Path
Don’t worry about all the others.
The only folder we need to work in, is ‘mnt’.
Within, you should see a folder corresponding to the mount point name you’ve created in the beginning.
In my case, it’s simply Storage.
Head inside your mount point. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<WHAT MEANS THIS, I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS
Towards the right side, in the drop down menu, select Directory instead of File.<<<<<<<<< I DON'T SEE THIS DROP DOWN MENU
In the text field next to this box, type in the name of the directory and click Create. ,,,,,,,,, SO I CAN NOT DO THIS
In my scenario, I will create three different folders within my Storage mount point. etc. etc.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND Head inside your mount point
If I go on that moment to the mount point in Disks Management - Mount, than I don't see a drop down menu

Can someone give me a good explanation how to do this, step by step.

Till now I spent already a whole day by traying to get it working.

Thanks, Piet
