NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
The NAS4Free Team is pleased to announce the release of version 10.3.0.3.2870 series.
Many work and efforts has been put in to make this a great release.
An new ZFS Tools page could not be included on time as it's still under rewrite, but this will be added within 3 weeks we think.
10.3.0.3 is really a huge step above the 10.2 series, we hope you like it like we do!
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .0.3.2870/
Everyone can upgrade from NAS4Free version 9.3.0.2.1310 or Higher.
README & CHANGELOG
NAS4Free Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible!!!
=====================================================
Upgrading NAS4Free "Embedded" or "Full" from any version below 9.3.0.2.1310 by webgui or from
LiveCD/USB is problematic, due a new size of boot partition & partition layout.
Please download and save your NAS4Free config and backup all files from second
partition if you do use the boot disk as your data disk too.
INSTALL FROM SCRATCH IS THAN THE ONLY WAY!
After installation you can restore your config and continue using your server.
Sorry for this inconvenience.
Install from scratch notes:
======================
Download NAS4Free livecd or liveusb and boot from it.
The compressed LiveUSB.img.gz needs to be extracted before you can write it to usb media,
you can use it with Win32DiskImager or any other tool.
Press 9 for the install menu and perform an embedded installation.
** Embedded.img.xz is only for upgrades by WEBGUI, do not extract and write to any media for fast installs! **
It will be problematic as it doesn't make the required partitions you do need!
Upgrade note:
============
You must associate CARP with physical interface explicitly after upgrading to 10.X fom 9.3 series.
You may need modifying your NFS and AFP share settings.
You may need modifying your ftp settings, no longer SSL is supported (only TLS).
You may need modifying your ups settings.
You may need to disable virtualbox-ose on 32-bits install first as this is an 64-bits version feature.
After upgrading, you might need to re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.
Send Buffer Size/Receive Buffer Size in CIFS/SMB is changed to 128480 since 9.3.0.2.1375.
** After the upgrade please do make a new backup of your configuration! see: System|Backup/Restore on menu **
Syncthing note:
===============
Syncthing 0.13.x versions are included but is incompatible with 0.12.x versions from 10.2!
Every user that uses Syncthing service should be aware they will have to upgrade all their syncthing clients too.
[EXTENSION] Extended GUI note:
==============================
ExtendedGUI extension is not compatible yet with 10.3.0.3 series.
Disable this before you do upgrade!
Requirements:
============
Embedded: 2GB CF/USB/SSD (NAS4free "Embedded" is Recommended Install)
Full: 4GB HDD/SSD (For developers and some advanced users, Not Recommended!)
Swap less: physical memory 2GB or higher needed.
With swap: physical memory 512MB + swap 512MB (swap 1024MB recommended).

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
Hello,
I did try FreeNAS 9.10 yesterday but than i also find this nas4free software.
Installing from liveusb was easy and managing from webgui works a lot smoother. It's menu is well organized and works better than suspected. Users say that FreeNAS is the best way to go. So far i found that Nas4free 10.3 does really works the best for me.
Thank you.

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
Tried to upgrade my test server from 10.2.0.2.2545 directly to 10.3.0.3.2870 and this fails.
During the 'upgrading firmware' process on the console, when the image (firmware.img) is copied, the web server terminates for some reason and the upgrade process is interrupted.
After that the machine tries to reboot, but then no boot image/kernel is found and the system is dead.
When I first upgrade from 10.2.0.2.2545 to 10.3.0.3.2853 and then to 10.3.0.3.2870 it works fine.
Tried this a couple of times and the outcome is always the same. Direct upgrade results in dead machine, using 2853 as intermediate step works fine.
Regards,
Mathieu

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
As far as testing this build on a UFS, not ZFS based system. It seems to be solid and without error. Transfer speeds working as intended. I used to see blocking locks behavior on the 10.2 release with CIFS/Samba file serving. That's gone. So I'm happy.

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
Hi,
I've tried upgrading from 10.2.0.2 (2545) 64-bit (which has been working flawlessly since last year). But the 10.3 releases (both of them) resulted in boot loops.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to capture/log what is happening, as it occurs around the time it starts sshd and cron. The moment I go back to 10.2 and restore my config it works fine.
I tried the embedded firmware update first, and then tried with an ISO embedded install to two different USB sticks. So I think I can rule out faulty image.
The best I could do was capture an image from a video I took of the boot process (attached). That is the last thing I see before the screen blanks and reboots.
Please let me know what else I can provide. I can potentially send my config.xml, but I would need to scrub it first.
My specs are:
AMD FX-8320E 8-core
32GB RAM
MSI 970A-G46 motherboard
Everything is at stock speeds (i.e. no overclocking) and this configuration has been working on 10.2 for months.
UPDATE:
I'm including the rconf, sysctrl, loader and cron from my config, as that seems to be where the problem happens. Everything is "default" there (as I moved from release-to-release). My only additions are the copy cron job, and the net.graph.maxdata (which I tried disabled during my 10.3 installs but it still boot looped).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Do you see boot loops/restarts without an config restore?
meaning can it boot the embedded usb right away after you did install it fresh.?

Hello,
I am Running a Backup (with acronis True Image) with the NAS as Target.
I get many of these messages, any clue whats behind ? Transfer performance is really bad atm:

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
Thanks for that idea. I guess my brain wasn't fully operational at 2am.zoon01 wrote:Do you see boot loops/restarts without an config restore?

I did that today and it worked. After that, I manually merged some basic stuff from my config.xml with the stock one from 10.3 piece-by-piece to see if I could find what caused the problem. And I made sure not to touch all the 10.3 defaults for rc.conf, sysctl.conf, and loader.conf.
Starting all the services seemed fine, except when I turned on VirtualBox, it instantly rebooted.
So my server's been up about 8 hours now, with 5 VMs running including Plex, and so far so good.
I don't know if there was some VirtualBox hiccup when moving from 4.X to 5.X and it corrected itself, or there was some conflict between it and the older conf settings I had, but it seems to be okay now.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Those look like permission errors for whatever credentials you are or are not using to connect to the CIFS mount.apollo567 wrote:Hello,

I would try a mount on the client in fstab(if linux), or if it's windows, a mapped network drive mount, and attempt to back it up to there. See if those errors still persist. If they are gone, then you need to tinker with either your SMB1/2/3 protocol on the server or the Acronis client permissions.
The cool thing about Acronis though, is that it works on every OS, and you have a central backup server(which would normally be your NAS), and it grabs the image from the clients running on your workstation. It's kinda like tivoli, except tivoli does active synchronization snapshots. In any case, if you are using the home version, you don't have all that useful stuff. Thing I hate about Acronis is their licensing.
In any case, to sum up. Mount Samba/CIFS locally. Test backup. If good, then permissions on client and/or NAS protocol config. If bad, client has a bug and will need to be reported to Acronis.

I am now seeing some samba/cifs fileshare anomalies. I think it's low level, because even though the bug is reported to samba dev's, they don't even know what to do with it. So, for my posterior posterity.

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
tonyd wrote:Hi,
I've tried upgrading from 10.2.0.2 (2545) 64-bit (which has been working flawlessly since last year).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Code: Select all

I have same problem after upgrade from 10.2.0.2 (rev 2545) to NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870... Something wrong with FreeBSD 10.3 ? And solution is clean install from ISO ?

Re: NAS4Free 10.3.0.3.2870 released (FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-P5)
Hi *,
I tested 10.3.0.3.2853 and 10.3.0.3.2870 on my NAS for a while.
Hardware: Supermicro X7-SPAH (Intel Atom D510m 4GB RAM), 4 HDs, ZFS
It runs stable and I like the changed GUI, but I found one problem, that made me go back to 10.2.0.2 again.
Test: copy files to/from an iMac using AFP.
With 10.3.0.3 I get a throughput from around 63 MB/s read and 40 MB/s write. The CPU usage of afpd is nearly at 100%.
After going back to 10.2.0.2.2545 the throughput is around 90 MB/s read and 60 MB/s write. CPU usage of afpd is at 50-60%.
CIFS/Samba is a lot slower, but I don't have values at the time.
What's the difference between 10.2.0.2 and 10.3.0.3? Both run stable for me. I use the same configuration parameters.
It looks to me as if something in 10.2.0.2 was compiled with different compiler optimizations, also because of the higher CPU usage of afpd in 10.3.0.3.

I found out that when I tried to set the MTU on my vlans that are part of a LAGG, I get stuck in a boot loop... Verified and reproducible. Don't think that it's actually specific to build, though I've yet to try others.
