Is it possible to upgrade nas4free full or only embedded?
Is it possible to go from full to embedded, upgrade and back again to full?
Will this procedure preserve jails and other additional installations?
Is it possible to install jails, and plex on an embedded installation?

Re: Full vs embeded
both, is easy to upgrade embeded, because you can upgrade by webgui, but you can upgrade full booting from liveUSB or liveCDfoxdoismil wrote:Is it possible to upgrade nas4free full or only embedded?
Yes ,but not recommended, please use what you need, (recommended install for begginers is embeded install).foxdoismil wrote:Is it possible to go from full to embedded, upgrade and back again to full?
only jails, not prserve installed pakages on plain BSD.foxdoismil wrote:Will this procedure preserve jails and other additional installations?

Re: Full vs embeded
the memory buss is the fastest [off die] buss in the computer
the embedded OS, on boot up, loads to and runs from RAM.
all else being equal, the embedded ver. is faster but uses about 250 Mb of the RAM.
generally not a problem.
other things that make N4F fast
64 bit hardware and OS
Gb LAN,
a generous amount of RAM for the intended use,
a fast multi core/thread CPU
avoiding any data transfer through USB or WiFi
but don't be discouraged, just less than a year ago my son moved up from
a parts bin provided 32 bit, minimal RAM, 100-T, single core non HT N4F
it had served him well and was gifted to a fellow as an upgrade for his NSLU2s

Re: Full vs embeded
Hello foxdoismil, Actually Full and Embedded is just a matter of preference and needs, targeted for two completely different audiences, Embedded is the main project approach, Embedded try/emulates to act like an embedded device, think like a router, switch or stuff like that, i.e(flash new firmware or rollback from WebGUI), while Full is a completely native installation of the software, think like plain FreeBSD with WebGUI on top(standard maintenance required but fully customizable), both of them have their Pros and Cons, also you can't hardly notice any speed difference(Full on HDD/SSD) since *Nix mostly deals with small text files actually, however current Full install options are only for UFS file system and lack instant snapshot features unlike ZFS, so unless you really need very special needs, stay with Embedded(preferred) install method, however if you already experienced with native *Nix environments and own hardware IPMI/BMC advantages for management, either should be no problem.

Re: Full vs embeded
I have read around (years ago) on the nas4free web site that embedded does not allow to install non nas4free provided add-ons like Plex Media Server for example.
JoseMR, I noticed that you use Plex and your installation is full. Should I understand that you chose full cause of this?
(And by the way your explanation is very didactic, maybe it should be included in nas4free installation wiki pages as well)

Re: Full vs embeded
Hello, I use NAS4Free Full and also Plex yeah, but that was not my main reason to choose Full over Embedded, to be honest I choose a "Custom RootOnZFS" Full installation primarily because I want full control of my server, for a variety of reasons, such as development, testing, persistence and the ability to rollback in case something went wrong thanks to ZFS snapshots, though "RootOnZFS" is another story.foxdoismil wrote:I have read around (years ago) on the nas4free web site that embedded does not allow to install non nas4free provided add-ons like Plex Media Server for example.

P.S I have provided a NAS4Free Plex Media Server Add-on for Embedded platforms in case you haven't noticed yet.
