"no pools available" <- will donate you your favorite charity!

Post by Bster13 »

{Yes, I will donate $50 to your favorite charity if I can get my data back, I'm in over my head and would gladly give for assistance}

I haven't booted up my single nas4free RAIDZ server in a while and while configuring a second server to back it up to, I powered on my primary to transfer files and saw something similar to this picture from another thread except it displayed this error message for ada02, ada03, and da0:
Image

I did clear configs and import disks and there was no more red on the screen, but I noticed this:

Image

I then clicked on the URL for "unknown" and it states: "no pools available."

In the dmesg output below you'll see ada02 is having trouble, and sometimes zpool import shows all drives are online and working and other times it shows this:

Code: Select all

$ zpool import
   pool: ZPool1
     id: 13178619544119044110
  state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices are missing from the system.
action: The pool can be imported despite missing or damaged devices. The
fault tolerance of the pool may be compromised if imported.
   see: http://illumos.org/msg/ZFS-8000-2Q
 config:

	ZPool1 DEGRADED
	  raidz1-0 DEGRADED
	    ada0 ONLINE
	    ada1 ONLINE
	    3357018873082393895 UNAVAIL cannot open
	    ada3 ONLINE
***I have not rebooted, and I'm unsure what to do at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

you can try to force import the pool: zpool import -f ZPool1
then
replace failed/missing disk: zpool replace ZPool1 3357018873082393895 ada2 (but check if ada2 is correct after the import)
then
sync webgui

maybe I'd like to mention, good idea for wanting to devote money to a charity for help, but bear in mind the project is runned by volunteers and the project itself also might need some support ! (see zoons post)

Understood, in my time of panic didn't notice that, but see that now. No problem giving there instead. When I get home from work, I'll give the suggestions a shot. thx.

Hrmm..the force did not seem to do anything, still reporting no pool.

I did notice this about the disks though, not it appears ada03 is having trouble:

And when I look at the disks just now, I see this:

Seeing the drives in red under Disks | Management is usually resolved by clicking "Clear config & import disks" followed by Apply.

Then try the zpool import -f ZPool1

Doesn't look too bad, seems the missing disk is there.
BTW a RAIDZ Pool which is degraded by only one disk, should still be accessible to backup the data.
I once had also such a problem when I used SATA Cables without a metal latch. Did you move the NAS Box recently ?

Hey Bster,

lets go back to basic principles. Command line message showed one disk faulted in which case your data is fine - if two disks are faulted you might be int trouble.

please provide the output of

Code: Select all

zpool status
and

Code: Select all

zpool import -f Zpool1
make sure you include the pool name

Damn, SATA cables cost me $50. :p I reseated them and they came up...I always read SATA cables are junk, etc. but these were all brand new cables and I hadn't messed around inside the case, I don't understand. Anyway, I am going to start the process of copying my data to my backup server pronto and then I will donate $50 to Nas4free. Many thanks for the help, and apologies for not responding sooner as I was away for work. Thanks!

Ok, maybe I've lost my mind and totally forgot where my data was way back when I set things up, but the server I thought had the data on it, that I've been posted screenshots about (ZPool1), appears to be wiped clean:

Image

And the server I intended to copy data ~to~ with a new config appears to have data hidden somewhere:

Image

I don't recall what the shares were or how anything was mapped in CIFS/WIndows prior. If I don't know the path, how can I access any of the data that may be on either server?

From a command prompt on the NAS type df -kh which will show space used by mounts, find the largest and start poking around for your data.

Hrmm...not a whole lot there:
$ df -kh
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/xmd0 120M 69M 51M 58% /
devfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev
/dev/xmd1 719M 261M 458M 36% /usr/local
/dev/da0s1a 743M 152M 592M 20% /cf
procfs 4.0K 4.0K 0B 100% /proc
Zpool1 7.7T 140K 7.7T 0% /mnt/Zpool1
/dev/xmd2 248M 3.7M 224M 2% /var
tmpfs 128M 44K 128M 0% /var/tmp
And yet I'm missing a large chunk of my storage:
