Do a new fresh install And restore your previously saved config.

Or configure by hand If not saved .

I'm talking about the conf directory in root:

/conf/config.xml

I deleted that. Can I just rsync a default config.xml from a virtual machine to my NAS4free box? I'm looking at the contents on a VM right now... looks like I deleted a lot of keys, settings, etc... :(

Do a fresh install, And configure servíces by hand.

You can restore your data disk, there are a lot of post about how to do it.

I restarted, and to my surprise, the system booted fine. I went to the /conf folder and config.xml was restored, along with conf.bk0, conf.bk1, conf.bk2... etc. So I guess the configuration directory is protected, impressive.

i think you just deleted something in the not persistent ram drive. When you reboot you create a new ram drive from your embedded installation and everything works fine - that's what embedded installation and ram drives are for.
