NAS4Free 11.0.0.4.3252 released (FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE-P3)

Ran 10.3.0.3 - Pilingitam (revision 3330) now for more then 4 days stable thus my hardware is OK.

With the tip from JoseMR I am now going to try the LSI SAS Driver P19 IT version with the 11.x branch of NAS4Free.

Below the steps how I installed this P19 IT firmware.

Asrock E3C224D4I-14S: Flashing LSI SAS driver to P19 IT version

1. Download Rufus (https://rufus.akeo.ie/) for creating bootable USB disk (FAT32)
2. Download LSI 2308 SAS P19 IT version from next location: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SAS/LSI ... 0Releases/
3. Unzip file of step 2 and copy it to your bootable USB disk
4. Boot from your USB disk
5. Find the SAS address by executing: sas2flsh -list
6. Execute the batch-file: smc2308t.bat (takes about 3-4 minutes)
7. When asked input the last 9 characters of your SAS address (e.g. 00000da00)

Also a hangup within 24 hours with P19 IT firmware. When checking the monitoring the hang up happened at 2:45 in the night. Not any task is explicitly scheduled for the NAS at that time. Also memory does not show any problems (plenty of enough free space at that time).

This is most probably the Timemachine for the MacBookAir of my daughter. I already tried with post #76 to disable APF but that did not help at that time. I have always next services enabled:

CIFS/SMB
FTP
SSH
NFS
AFP (*)
RSYNC

Monitoring (*)

Services marked with (*) I already tried with disabled, but to no avail. I will now disable FTP and RSYNC and check.

Also disabling FTP and RSYNC did not solve the issue. Next test is disabling the server power control utility.

@Developers: any other thing I can test (see whole thread what I already tried).

Again with 10.x branch completely stable, thus hardware is OK.

EDIT: For now I am switching back to 10.x branch again. In case I need to execute some test, please let me know.

On default 11 series a downgrade will not happend of this driver
Perhaps you can try compile yourself but notice it does requires some work to create a build with old driver.
I only can hope freebsd 11 seems those same problems and get fixes on this driver if needed.

When reading the releases notes of this firmware I see:

4. fix SATA drives poor performance issue
5. Fix In the IOP a false reply parity error is being generated, which results in a 0x1500 fault.
6. support X11 platform

Especially point 6 gives me the hope.

I'm really sorry to hear that , I hope further releases based on FreeBSD 11.1 will address most of this common performance/random odd issues.

Been running 11.0.0.4 - Sayyadina (revision 3305) for almost a month. Very happy with performance & stability.

On my other NAS system with 11.0.0.4 it is also running more then 1 month stable. It is just this system which gives hang ups. When running 10.x on the same system with same hardware and software settings it is running stable for several months. This means that somewhere in the 11.x branch (most probably the FreeBSD software) there is an issue causing the problem.

Hangup after 67 hours. Hoping that next update of FreeBSD solves the issue. For now again back to 10.x branch which runs stable on exactly the same hardware.

Since I have a similar problem (system freeze) with newer releases of the 11.x series on one machine with just 2G RAM try to monitor the detailed memory usage (in Status > Monitoring > Memory Usage). In my case the system got stuck during rsync backups with a lot of directories/files. It shows that rsync obviously catches wired memory and doesn't free it during/after a run which leads to no more memory available - even with a lot of available swap memory on disk!!! With 10.3.x releases all rsync backups run fine ...

Maybe you can confirm such memory related problem in your case ?

Unfortunately also hang up with 11.0.0.4.3958. This is indeed really strange. I already looked into memory in the past (see full thread for details). I have 16 GB ECC memory. With 10.x the system runs stable for months.

Hi, sad that this issue still not been solved for you with recent releases, though this is a common known pattern for all releases ending with zero(XX.0), probably things will get better for users with specifics issues on later(future) NAS4Free releases based on FreeBSD 11.1, not to mention that NAS4Free Web UI (PHP)backend is under constant rewrite/improvements in which stability will be constantly compromised from time to time in this phase.

For critical production deployments, consider NAS4Free 10.3 which based on the well tested FreeBSD 10.3 branch.
