Webgui upgrade from 11.0.0.1.3252 embedded bare-metal install on test N54L system failed twice with "ERROR: Restored configuration corrupted." after "cp:/conf/config.xml: Read-only file system." line.

After reboot lost configuration both times. But now it shows it's on 11.0.0.4.3305 after config restored and rebooted twice. Strange.

Check/replace your usb key, also make sure your ram is stable!
Clearly your system is not stable as backup/restore config on upgrade procedure did fail.
Now it's important to find it's cause.

I will do a fresh embedded install on a new tested usb key tomorrow. Testing ram overnight.

UPDATE: Ran 5 block test passes with Rufus on the usb key without any errors. Ram memtest overnight (14 hours with 12 full passes) without any errors. Did a clean embedded install of 11.0.0.4 - Sayyadina (revision 3305) on a new tested usb key successfully. So now I wait and see.

When trying to install NAS4Free 11 embedded on a usb stick, I get stuck at the stage where the installer says something like: 'could not create GPT partitions' on the target usb stick.

I've tried a lot of stuff (changing from installing from live usb to live cd, disconnecting all connected drives, fiddling/resetting the bios, different usb sticks, etc.etc.), but I can't get past this problem.

In the past I had this exact same problem trying to install the most recent n4f 10.x
I could only get past this problem by first installing v.10.3.0.3.2964, and after that, upgrade to a more recent version.

Has something perhaps changed in the installation after 10.3.0.3.2964?
Or is there some special prerequisite for the target usb stick I am perhaps missing?
Should it be pre-formatted or something?
I noticed that in the process of it installing, there is no mention at all if the target usb stick is being formatted. (or erased)

Or should I maybe choose MBR (legacy) for the target usb stick instead of GPT (default)?

try MBR, perhaps your motherboard do not suport GPT

Also make sure your system bios is latest version!

Trying 11 on a vm, first installed 3252 embedded from USB (fresh, not upgrade), obi, thebrig, then mysql in the brig. Works perfectly so far.
Upgraded to 3305 by firmware update via web gui. Works perfectly so far.
For prudence, will try it for real after a couple weeks, but it looks rock solid as every N4F (I) have seen so far!

thanks for the *excellent* work!!

I'm not sure, it's old, but not completely ancient. (GA-D510UD)
I messed some more with (resetting) bios, using different usb sticks etc. (I had some seemingly erratic irregularities in having them recognized), and I changed installation to usb stick from GPT to MBR, and now it's finally working.
Thanx for listening ;-)

So you have The Brig working under 11? I thought it wasn't compatible (yet)?

Upgrade to full install went smoothly. Still having the minor issue that the CPUs won't idle below C1 state, when they were going into C3 under 10.3.

Yes. It's in a VM for now until I prove it to myself, but so far just as solid as any other version:
See the notes below; this to me is *perfect*; As good or better than everything else I've seeen. YMMV

notes (sorry it's not really code but I don't see how to attach a text file. maybe I'm too new to have the perms?)

Code: Select all

Don't upgrade embedded
    Save config
    Install from USB
strip the extensions from the config. The format has changed; better to reinstall!
    restore config
    upgrade zpool
Install OBI
It says to just run this from the "run" command in the webui, but doesn't seem to work.
    Instead run from a shell:
    # make a place for ext
    # cd /usr/local/www/
    nas4free: www# fetch https://raw.github.com/crestAT/nas4free-onebuttoninstaller/master/OBI.php && mkdir -p ext/OBI && echo '<a href="OBI.php">OneButtonInstaller</a>' > ext/OBI/menu.inc && echo -e "\nDONE"
then refresh the gui as normal and run the OBI installer.

If thebrig doesn't download tarballs...
    fetch them to .../thebrig/work
    cd /path-to-thebrig/work
    nas4free: work# fetch ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/amd64/11.0-RELEASE/MANIFEST -o 11.0-RELEASE_amd64_MANIFEST
    nas4free: work# fetch ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/amd64/11.0-RELEASE/base.txz -o FreeBSD-amd64-11.0-RELEASE-base.txz

Embedded upgrade from prev 11.0.0.4 went well.
This with virtualbox and jails under TheBrig running.
This solved a small problem with Crashplan in a jail under TheBrig where stopping the Crashplan jail did not delete the PID file.
Now all is well! Thanks!

I just updated my NL40 microserver from 9.3.0.2 to 11.0.0.4.3305
Fresh install went well however

Extensions - TheBrig - Updates
produces parse error

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected end of file in /mnt/Jail/Ext/thebrig/conf/ext/thebrig/extensions_thebrig_update.php on line 702

Any ideas why this is happening ?
Thanks

Did it ever start before? Maybe not a 11-specific issue?
I've had problems starting jails in the past, esp when trying to access zfs directly from a jail.

FWIW, here's my thebrig config:

Code: Select all

        </thebrig>

Slightly off-topic for this thread, but is there any release info for 10.3.0.3.3286? I've been waiting for an announcement since it appeared but there's no release thread for it...

Did it ever start before? Maybe not a 11-specific issue?
I've had problems starting jails in the past, esp when trying to access zfs directly from a jail.
I think it is theBrig being not yet updated for 11. I have fresh install 11 but find error and then raulfg3 advise to revert back. After reverted into 10, no problem for jail (see below).

MHS0027,

I also find such problem. View viewtopic.php?f=79&p=73164#p73144

When you go from Help menu to the Forum link you will notice that the UI is not responsive anymore (Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox 50). The WebUI is not hanging because when you refresh the page in your webbrowser the UI is responding again.

I've tried a lot of stuff (changing from installing from live usb to live cd, disconnecting all connected drives, fiddling/resetting the bios, different usb sticks, etc.etc.), but I can't get past this problem.
Had this happen many times on different versions when trying to install 10 & 11 embedded over a previous installation on a USB stick. I didn't mention this as I thought that it was 'normal'. My 'remedy' was to reboot or restart the server (running from LiveUSB), then the installation to the target embedded USB went fine. It reminds of the case that some changes to partitions require restart, which happens here. Maybe this needs to be added to some 'sticky' or documentation.

Thnx for replying and confirming oops741.
I couldn't imagine I was the only one having this issue.

Either my hardware has some problem with n4f >10.3.0.3.2964, or there is some problem in the way NAS4Free prepares (formats/partitions) a USB stick for installing embedded.
Hopefully the developers can look into this and perhaps fix this.

Edit,
raulfg3's suspicion was right, and my motherboard has issues with gpt on usb stick embedded.
Choosing mbr (legacy) now seems to work every time.

Hi,

A little help please.

May I ask why i read this :
Changes after release 11.0.0.4.3252
===================================
- Update translations.
- Upgrade bash to 4.4 patch 5.
- Upgrade mDNSResponder to 765.1.2.
- Upgrade arcconf to v2_02_22404.
- Upgrade virtualbox-ose to 5.1.10.
And i get this :

Code: Select all

nas: /mnt# pkg upgrade virtualbox-ose
Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue...
FreeBSD repository is up-to-date.
All repositories are up-to-date.
pkg: virtualbox-ose is not installed, therefore upgrade is impossible
Checking integrity... done (0 conflicting)
Your packages are up to date.
Is there any reason please ? Is it installed within the virtual box plug-in which would mean I need to install it if Nas4free is a VM installed on another OS ? Just to be sure I don't break anyhting and that I can solve an issue. Thanks.

titi_Nas4free:

login phpvirtualbox after enable Virtualization > VirtualBox

Than should look like this:
phpvbox.png
For update system files/software yourself you need todo compile not try pkg upgrade
as we do not use pkg installs at all. You can not use pkg system for this.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
System specs: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 -embedded on Samsung 860 EVO 256GB and Supermicro X10SL7-F w / Bios v3.2, IPMI v.03.86 / CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz - 32GB Crucial DDR3L 1600mhz ECC 1.35v , LSI 2308 on PH20.00.07.00 IT mode, Storage: 5x Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) raidz

Development system is same system in virtualbox.
