Backup data to USB drive
I have a USB drive connected to my Nas4Free server. What I would like to do is to backup all data to the USB drive in Windows format nightly. Is this possible? Thanks

Re: Backup data to USB drive
Leaving the drive connected Isn't a true backup in my paranoid overly compulsive opinion.
A power Surge, malware, fire, theft whatever while highly unlikely would most likely damage both your nas and backup data.
Better approach would be ZFS snapshots to preserve data and monthly or even weekly backups then storing the drive offsite. That storage can be work, a friend's house, family member, etc.

Re: Backup data to USB drive
I guess that the situation I'm thinking about would be some situation where they would have to leave in a hurry and set up at a new location. At present they have a Buffalo Linkstation with 2 drives in Raid 1. Daily online backup is through a mapped drive from a workstation using iBackup. All the data will be transferred to the new Nas4free machine which will leave the linkstation free (Sorry I said USB, linkstation is networked. Long day.) I have set up the new Nas with 4 SAS drives in Raidz2. I have read about ZFS Snapshots but am having a hard time understanding if they are an actual backup that could be used if the main Nas is out of the picture of if they have to be used to restore the main Nas. Right now I have the new Nas built (all enterprise level components) and am experimenting with it before I take it to the client and transfer any data.
