Newbie cannot connect to share from windows or mac

Post by jemhayward »

I've installed nas4free on an Acer mini-PC as it has 5 USB sockets and I have a collection of USB HDDs that I want to have available on my network for backups and so on. I don't need RAID etc, just want to keep things simple.

I installed by booting from USB using rufus.exe and the image from nas4free, and have then installed onto the internal HDD. It's all up and running.
I have attached another HDD by USB, and have imported the disc, and have formatted it using UFS, eventually managed to mount it, and I think I've set up the share.

However, although I can see the share from my windows machine, I cannot access it. It doesn't even ask for a username or password. If I try to access it from my Mac, it asks for the password (though I think that is the Mac) and then it says that there is no access.

I'm obviously doing something wrong. But what?

is recomended not to use USB disk as data disk in a NAS (can be used to transfer data from / to NAS but not for internal storage.

Please use other Mobo or try to use SATA disk atached to sata Mobo.

You can do a fresh embeded install on a USB stick of >N4F and boot from it, and use internal SATA to atach a big Data Disk.

Ah, so it won't work with USB attached discs... the machine won't accommodate another disc, and I don't want to buy another machine, as I have too many already. Is it impossible to use USB disks, or just not a good idea?

[SOLVED] Re: Newbie cannot connect to share from windows or mac

Worked this out - I was trying to share a subfolder that didn't actually exist. Now sharing at a higher level, and it is working smoothly.

please do some more test:

1 - try to reboot and confirm that still meet your USB Disk.

2 - atach a new USB disk and test it, and then reboot and revise that still meet your data.

USB support on BSD is not great and you can't hate N4F because of USB!!!

I don't even recommend USB for the embedded boot.
fine if it works but when the excrement hits the fan .....
it is usually USB related [IMHO after viewing many posts]
if there is an expansion slot one can get SATA ports with an expansion card.
otherwise
best wishes in advance.
