GUI Support for RAID-Z with disks of different sizes

Post by Malignosama »

Hello,

To keep the usage of the CLI to the minimum, I would propose the inclussion of a "force" parameter in the ZFS pool creation interface to allow the creation of a RAID-Z with HDs of different sizes.

It is quite normal that users without any experience on FreeBSD administration or ZFS itself attempt to create Home Servers with the set of HDs they have at hand (normally recycled ones). I have some colleagues who have migrated to FreeNAS 8.2.1 only because it does not "complain" in this especific case, and really, it's a pitty ;) .

Thanks for your incredible work and I would be happy if you take this suggestion into account.

Cheers

not sure if is a good idea, can be dangerous if user do not know how to use it , perhaps usefull if a warning message and a link to some help page can be done too.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

i second this request, although one should add a disclaimer about the disk thrashing it could cause.
I did this via CLI and it worked until i got me new set of 2TB drives and didn't need it, but it would be great! more on the "thats really cool side of things! gnop can be used for this easily. I use that for creaking ashift 12 ZFS arrays.
