Swap question on new embedded install from 10.3.0.3.4068

Post by provels »

Hello. Yesterday when I was replacing my 2TB disks with new 3TB disks, my USB flash drive went poof and I needed to do a fresh install and restore. Looking through the install menus, I was not able to find the expected "Embedded/No swap" install that I believe used to be there (maybe I mis-remember... ;) ). I took the default legacy install and got the swap prompt for 4GB swap (I am using an 8GB flash). It's up and running OK, but now I have swap available in the web GUI. When load testing the new setup, I saw no swap use and max about 70% of my 4GB RAM in use. From what I read, I think this swap memory has been added for emergency availability only and is not expected to be used regularly. Is that correct or did I miss the correct options for a correct embedded USB install?

Also, is the GPT install option just for new (meaning current production) hardware like UEFI, or something else?

Thanks all again for a great project. :D

Yes swap is not there to intend heavy usage, add more ram or do proper tuning but default is to install with swap as fallback incase you do get out of ram, the system will crash hard if there is no swap available to use.
Embedded with swap on ssd/usb key is recommended install at all times.

GPT is pretty default nowadays MBR legacy install option still there for some older machines who do not support UEFI and GPT.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like I made the right choices. Thanks again for all your great work, my 13 year-old HP server loves it!

EDIT - It was probably because the old flash drive was only 2GB, where the new was 8GB. That's probably why I saw the swap settings this time; more space available.
