Removed a disk from a pool?

Post by unkis17 »

I have been running NAS4Free for many years now and I am a basic Home user for Media and File sharing. A few months ago I had a degraded pool and honestly I can't remember what I did to fix it. I was running 9.??? Sandstorm then. I have since upgraded to 10.3.0.3 - Pilingitam (revision 4107)

Today I am looking at my ZFS as I am thinking of changing my config and increasing my storage sizes. I have two pools, "Data" = 4x1Tb RaidZ and "Media" = 4x2Tb RaidZ.

I noticed that my "Data" pool is only showing three drives now somehow? Is it possible to remove a drive from a pool? The system says 2.72 Total / 2.15 Allocated. That is not possible with only 3 x 1Tb drives. It has been a long time since playing with ZFS, but I don't think you can add vdevs to an existing pool. I am backed up so if I need to destroy the pool I can (though I have never done this)

The missing drive in question still shows up in the "Disk Management" tab. I'm guessing its just wasting electricity?

Any ideas before I risk destroying this pool and copying all data back over via from USB backup?

Any help or advise would be awesome. Thank you, unkis

Never quite figured out what I did with my old 4x1Tb RaidZ1, but I performed a backup and destroyed the pool. Started from scratch with 3x1Tb RaidZ1.

When I re-imported my disks I noticed SMART was off (I'm guessing I did this, but don't remember). Found a few of my disks were throwing some SMART errors and ended up having to replace and resilver one of the disks in the 3x1Tb pool.

All is working now, but I think it is time to start thinking about getting new drives as I have several minor SMART errors. The drives in question have been online for about 5-6 years now. Although in a home use capacity and spend all day at idle until I return from work...

I ran a 2 x 3 mirror for a while but had one fall out somehow much like your situation. No data loss so I moved on.

If smart & ZFS are not complaining I don't worry. NAS4Free has a great feature built in, go to Diagnostic --> Information --> SMART then use the browser search function to look for the word "consider".

If "consider" is found on that page it will most likely be in bold red and accompanied by dire warning s about impending disk failure. This is why we run mirrors, to hold our data safe until a replacement is added.
