can't determine rootfs / operating system has halted

Post by n4freenewbie »

Hi all,

Just built a new machine and I'm trying to get N4F to run on it. When I boot from the LiveUSB, it ends with "can't determine rootfs" followed soon by "The operating system has halted." Any ideas on what I should do? See below for screenshots.

how do you burn liveUSB?.

Please use rufus to avoid problems.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

I was using Win32DiskImager. Does Rufus write the .img file directly? It seems like it wants to choose the .iso.

I just used Rufus to write the LiveUSB. Same issues. I tried out the USB on my laptop to see if it would boot, and it did. It appears to be an issue with my hardware setup, but I don't know what it could be. How do I investigate the issue further?

Thanks all!

Remember that you can do the N4F install on other machine, and once installed plug the USB on your final hardware, thats the magic of BSD

Thanks for the tip. I installed the embedded N4F from liveUSB onto another USB by booting up on a different machine. However, I still get the same errors when trying to boot on my hardware.

some type of incompatibility between BSD ( the uderlining OS of N4F), and your Hardware, please play with ROM options or N4F boot options ( do you try MBR instead GPT install? ).

Hello you maybe experiencing USB device timeouts or temporary disconnection while booting, thus preventing booting further, you can try another USB port either 2.0 and 3.0, a different USB stick and give some tests, as a last resort you may want to install in a small HDD if there are ports available.
