Strange SAMBA shares
i have installed nas4free in embedded mode on 4GB ram machine. it is running fine. i formatted a 500gb hdd as a test case as UFS. created 3 folders within /mnt folder. created shares based on them with users as needed.
however, not able to access all 3 folders from win 7 and win 10. all are visible. folder 1 - i can enter but not copy anything in it. folder 2 and 3 - logging into them is not happening. not able to figure this out. i had thought this will be easier to set up compared to handling samba settings on ubuntu.
i made 3 users. s1, s2, s3
made 3 shares - f1, f2, f3.
i have redone everything from scratch. testparm - s shows that the settings of f1, f2, f3 folders are same.
yet i can access f1 but not f2 and f3.i set up disk management - but did not use the software raid option, nor the ZFS nor the encryption. mounted data folder within /mnt. and then created f1, f2 and f3 using file manager and selected and shared them.
i set permissions of the each user from file manager menu also.
can post the results of testparm - s if that helps.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
ok.
i have now understood this much -
that once my folders are created. i need to re assign the owners of each folders. and change permissions of the folder if needed.
Thanks. Will update once set up.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
nope - still stuck. i am enclosing the snapshot to show the folders, groups and permissions.
the shares are now visible in the file managers of both windows and ubuntu explorer but the msg says - ACCESS DENIED in windows.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
post your actual smb config to revise.
revise you use SMB3 and you have SMB configured to use SMB3

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
I have changed the default smb settings to smb3.
same issue -
windows asks for user and password twice - but says - access denied.
ubuntu asks for user and password again and again.
edit. - i made the smb settings back to default. and did some " change the owner settings" - 2 of 3 folders are opening up - from windows and ubuntu. now i need to ensure that the 3rd folder also works. and then i need to lock down. since presently the 2 folders are openable to all by default.
edit 2. - all settings are possible through graphical interface between user and groups, smb and file manager. however using SSH terminal helped. for making the folder owner changed.
now all 3 folders are working properly.
many thanks for bearing with me and my sporadic msgs on IRC chat.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
another issue is the hard disk size. showing as 31mb - whereas the disk should 450gb.
however, all is well. am able to copy files much larger than 31mb - so it must be good.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
Yes, I saw the link - seems good.
But prior to that, I used SSH tunnel through PuTTY - it worked well and made me at ease with command line interface. now my fundas are clear about SAMBA.
Many thanks.

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
Dear NAS4FREE coders,
It has been a good journey and I now have a pretty simple and sturdy server running NAS4FREE.
I am using PuttY and WINSCP as needed along with the web browser to manage the settings.
Now I am only missing a mail server in this.
Amazing effort.
Regards and all the best,

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
I need to install email server on NAS4FREE - for my small office - 4-10 users at most to manage sending internal emails to each other.
Is there a mail server in-built in nas4free?
Or i should install iRedMail on the NAS4FREE system?

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
YES, you can install iRedMail , and must work (Not tested), remember to install inside a jail if you use embeded install.
PD; You can install on plain filesystem if use full install, please read about embeded Vs Full install on wiki and forums:

Re: Strange SAMBA shares
I am running embedded install - that is more stable as advised for NAS4FREE - will stick with that.
For running iredmail on jail - then one can use virtualbox and run it on any os.
