ZFS & easy drive upgrade

Post by kenZ71 »

The short version: used ZFS snapshots and zpool send | zpool recv to transfer my data from a 2 x 3TB mirror to a new 2 x 8TB mirror.

All the details, if curious,

Over on the Data Hoarders reddit they often talk about buying WD external drives for the WD Reds that are inside. For whatever reason these go on sale for almost half the cost of a bare wd red. Then pry the case apart for one WD Red. https://m.imgur.com/r/DataHoarder/IsZxx

I also often sing the praise of NAS4Free on reddit.

So I now have a wee bit more space going from a 2 x 3TB mirror to 2 x 8TB mirror.

These two commands made the transfer easy

Code: Select all

zpool snapshot tank/Music@731
zpool send tank/Music@731 | recv storage/Music
tank is the old pool, storage is new pool on new drives

Music is the dataset

@731 is the snapshot name

Huge thanks to the devs for a fantastic product that is well thought out.
11.2-RELEASE-p3 | ZFS Mirror - 2 x 8TB WD Red | 28GB ECC Ram
HP ML10v2 x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4150 CPU @ 3.50GHz

Extra memory so I can host a couple VMs
1) Unifi Controller on Ubuntu
2) Librenms on Ubuntu
