Slow performance CIFS/SMB

Post by vince »

Hi,

I mount a NAS with this hardware :
- Asrock Z270M-ITX/AC Carte Mère Intel Socket LGA 1151
- 2x Corsair ValueSelect 8 Go DDR4 2133 MHz CL15
- Intel Core i3 6100T (3.2 GHz)
- 4x HDD Western Digital Red (WD40EFRX) 4To

I have very slow transfert speed :
- From my computer to NAS : 6-7 Mo/s
- From NAS to my computer : 1Mo/s

I test the performance of my HDDs :

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/raidpool/test.dd bs=2M count=10k
10240+0 records in
10240+0 records out
21474836480 bytes transferred in 78.517325 secs (273504434 bytes/sec)

Code: Select all

dd if=/mnt/raidpool/test.dd of=/dev/null bs=2M count=10k
10240+0 records in
10240+0 records out
21474836480 bytes transferred in 66.447562 secs (323184719 bytes/sec)
Then I test the network:
NAS : iperf3 -s

Code: Select all

vince - your problem is 99% not related to N4F SW. It seems you have some 100Mbit network hardware somewhere between your NAS and PC (probably 100Mbit card, switch/router...or very very very bad cable).

...or very very very bad cable).

...or a cheap network cable without all eight cores (four twisted pairs) connected. 100Mbps Ethernet only needs four cores (two twisted pairs), whereas 1Gbps Ethernet needs all eight connected.

Also: agreed - most routers have only 100Mbps sockets on the back, thereby limited the speed of anything connected via the router. You would need to get a separate 1Gbps switch between the PC and NAS, and then connect that via a single network cable to the router to provide a 1Gbps path between the PC and router.

There's definitely something wrong there
On the last two tests I see 7-8Mbits which is abysmal even comparing to -ancient - 802.11g WiFi speeds.
My Nas
  1. Case: Fractal Design Define R2
  2. M/B: Supermicro x9scl-f
  3. CPU: Intel Celeron G1620
  4. RAM: 16GB DDR3 ECC (2 x Kingston KVR1333D3E9S/8G)
  5. PSU: Chieftec 850w 80+ modular
  6. Storage: 8x2TB HDDs in a RaidZ2 array ~ 10.1 TB usable disk space
  7. O/S: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4.6625 -amd64 embedded
  8. Extra H/W: Dell Perc H310 SAS controller, crosflashed to LSI 9211-8i IT mode, 8GB Innodisk D150SV SATADOM for O/S

Backup Nas: U-NAS NSC-400, Gigabyte MB10-DS4 (4x4TB Seagate Exos disks in RaidZ configuration - 32GB RAM)

Hi,

Thank you for your replies. Effectively my switch was a 10 / 100Mbps. I change it for this : NETGEAR GS108GE
This switch has two led per RJ45. Left led for 100Mbps and the right led for 10Mbps. If both flash then the connexion is in 1Gpbs. In my case both flashes.
But the performance is not good.
