Import ZFS pool created in FreeNAS (11.1)

Post by danmtripp »

G'Day - first posting here.

I'm having lots of performance issues with FreeNAS 11 running on a HP NL40 Microserver (8 GB non ECC RAM, dual core AMD Turion 1.5 Ghz) with 4 x 3TB in RAIDZ+1

Started getting random stops in the Web UI on a FreeNAS 11 build I did around August/Sept 2017, so I decided to build again from scratch.

I'm seeing the same issues again! Randomly the Web UI won't show anything in the left pane, or will throw up ugly Python errors, if the "legacy" web UI doesn't work - I'll try the new beta one, but that often refuses to show stuff like jails... and it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

I daren't ask any questions on the FreeNAS forums because they seem a bit arrogant over there when I've asked questions in the past.

I'm thinking my NL40 may be getting long in the tooth to run FreeNAS 11.x - I've been using FreeNAS since version 6 or 7 - and I've tried out NAS4Free a few times on other hardware since - it might be time to jump ship and switch 100% over to NAS4Free...

But I don't want to have to backup 5 TB of data - then restore it (the next biggest HDDs I have to backup onto are 1.5 TB). I'd rather just remove the USB stick running FreeNAS - install a fresh one, boot off the NAS4Free ISO (via USB), install NAS4Free, then import my zpool. I'm assuming this entirely possible? Been unemployed over six months - so cannot afford to throw new hardware at my problem...

So - if you missed the question above - Can I import my FreeNAS zpool into NAS4Free?

Yes, your aproach is possible, you can import your ZFS pool from webGUI or from CLI, in both cases, you need to update webGUI to reflect changes, so rememeber to push the button "Clear Config & Import Disk" ( this only reflects on webGUI the real disk detected), and last use the "sync" buton in the ZFS section of N4F to sync webGUi to real detected ZPools.

last steps in yourside are to configure services by hand / SMB, SSH, etc...)
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)
