New build from Old PC questions

Post by napalm »

Not sure where else to put this so figured I'd put it here.

I plan on using my current desktop computer setup that I have as my first build at this. SO conventional wisdom aside - I'm not buying new hardware of that cost or ability to try this. If I was going to spend all that money from scratch I wouldn't be here I'd have already bought a Qnap or Thecus device.

Processor - AMD PhenomII X4 970.
Motherboard: MSI - 870A-G54
Ram: 12gb dual channel DDR3
Disabling Audio and removing Video cards
PSU - Thermaltake 80Plus certified 450W. I forget the model number.

Hard drives - Samsung 840Pro SSD
5 - 2tb - HGST 7K2000 drives. I think I have that right it's either 2000 or 3000 I don't have them yet.

Assuming a RaidZ2 setup.

Plan is to store videos on this for use in the home streaming, maybe put music on it, and keep other odds and ends. I have a NAS box now that I keep the odds and ends and personal pictures on - mostly to be the first step auto backup for my mobile.

I plan to run EMBY server in a jail as my media support. and I will have transmission and some other stuff running

Despite it works, ZFS is not recommended with non ECC memory....

not recomended, but works, only need to know possible future problems, in my case to store Movies, not really a big problem to have a small corruption.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

so aside from the ECC discussions.

Anyone run this OS on AMD hardware. IS NAS4Free based on the AMD64 architecture, or the I86-64 architecture of free BSD.

Does anyone running NAS4Free use EMBY?

I run N4F on AMD hardware, my CPU is x64 so I use latest version.

BTW: You won't need to waste a nice Samsung 840Pro SSD device on your NAS4Free - just use a small (8GB+) ordinary USB memory stick to boot from: as NAS4Free actually runs from RAM (copied from the USB on boot, as I understand it.)

Thank you - however I was under the impression that a seperate drive to use for the VM storage (jail storage) and as a buffer would help the system overall.

Is that not the case? I also have it to spare as I have nothing else to put it in.

all help is appreciated.

SSD really improve jails, but is not noticeable for boot N4F, and if you want to use as ZIL, you need to use entire, not partitioned.
Not sure for your post what do you want to use your SSD.

To be fair I'm not 100% sure either.

I was under the impression - probably faulty - that I could have the vdev pool setup, then have the SSD loaded with the OS boot and it would be the storage hole for the jails. In the jail I was going to run EMBY, Transmission, and surely something else. The idea being that EMBY and Transmission and ? would all run off the SSD - and would do all their quick writes to the SSD. for something like transmission - it would write to the pool once - after the download was complete.

Again - not knowing what I don't know - I make some assumptions. Would I boot the system off USB, then have the SSD sitting there for the jails?

ALso a friend of mine set his up to boot off a 64gb SSD that he got on the cheap. He's rigged with 2 SSD's and a 5 drive Vdev pool.

I run two AMD N4F systems (specs below), one at the house and one at the office with no problems at all. With the recent spectre and meltdown revelations AMD is probably the better choice anyway

For a totally drama free ZFS setup I would recommend ditching the onboard sata and installing any of the SAS2008 based controllers flashed to IT mode. The Dell PERC H200 can be purchased for next to nothing on ebay.

I'm running N4F/Xigmanas on an AMD phenom X4 955 8GB non ECC memory and the O.S. is on a 120 GB Drevo SSD

I'm using ZFS on all my data drives (3TB WD Reds) and so far I have had no problems

My Data Drives run through an Adaptec 5805 Raid card set up as a straight through HBA (it set itself like this by default) also cheap on EBay

It seems to run quite smoothly on AMD hardware

Removing the video card might be unwise I tried it and my system wouldn't boot without some kind of video output even though it's rarely used

An old PCI one will do the trick though if you've a slot for one but you need to make sure the bios is looking for a PCI not a PCIe
XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 6026/ AMD Phenom II X4 955/ Asrock 970 Pro 3 R2.0/ 8GB DDR3/ boot drive Drevo 120GB SSD/ data drives 4 x 3TB WD Red

I am running an AMD for one of my old N4F [XigmaNAS upgrade coming soon][done]
2 core non HT 3900 Mhz AMD A6-6400K, 8Gb non ECC, 2 TB ZFS Mirror,
available RAM 7.557 Gb, 64 bit Nas4Free 9.3.0.2.1771 [89 watts, 68 Mbps]
a friend of my son's former bit mining box, reduced to the on board video.
I used an older SSD for the embedded boot medium/swap/etc.
never a problem, but what ever memory you use must be perfect.
the same for other parts, nothing prone to fault.
any 64 bit hardware retired in a need for speed, but not ANY prone to BSOD.

also check the power consumption these are handy, https://www.walmart.com/ip/P3-Internato ... gKxCvD_BwE
under 100 watts good, under 50 even better,
depending how long you are willing to wait for an emergence from deep sleep and spin-up
[a seemingly long 8 seconds] 17 watts at rest savings will pay for the refurbished $90 [I5]
[no expansion space above the mirrored drives]

one caveat
My lan and server gear are [for the last 8 years]
all powered by a [refurbished] 1kw Liebert double conversion UPS
as I recall, many questions here began "after a power outage"
PS
AMD box retired
my seemingly endless chain of updates from N4F to Xi is now complete
with all four at 8Gb RAM three i5, one i3, all fast and stable and low KWH
by using this free advise, you, your heirs, etc
absolve, save, and hold harmless the advisor.
CAVEAT EMPTOR
YMMV
