NIC doesn't come up after upgrade from FreeNAS 9.x

Post by new-at-nas »

Hello,

I've been running an old FreeNAS embedded without upgrading for several years.

I now installed the 5774 build embedded to a USB stick and booted from it. That worked.

I connected to the GUI via http, which worked.

I uploaded the old configuration file. The GUI accepted and announced a reboot.

After that reboot the NAS doesn't come online because the NIC has "no carrier", complains about not being able to ping the gateway and understandably fails to start services (lighttpd and others); the NAS doesn't react to pings from the outside.

The attached screenshot shows the NAS's boot messages.

I noticed the "ether" field and the "hwaddress" field showing identical values. Is that a problem? Is it possible that the 11.x series misreads or misinterprets configuration files from older Nas4Free versions?

Also there are VLAN-related flags that I think shouldn't be there, because I never configured a VLAN. I also never knowingly configured anything IPv6-related.

What can I do, short of re-installing and re-configuring the entire NAS from scratch?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Note: I lost the USB stick with the older (working) installation, so I can't reboot that.

This looks like it may be the same issue I just started a new thread on. I was assuming it was related to my Intel i218v ethernet on-board my motherboard with some driver issue in the newer system. I don't see how a VLAN issue would cause the carrier to drop, but I don't see how much of anything would cause that, so I guess that's as good a guess as anything.

I see this is two months old. Did you find a solution?
