LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.

LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.
I'm a long time user of the NAS4Free, still running one box with 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 6694). using another old PC I tried the embedded to usb but the thing just wouldn't boot, just continued to look like it was booting. Anyway read that I could use the LiveCD and it would save the config file to a usb key automatically if the usb drive was formatted prior to use. I formatted with XP, stuck it in the box, booted from the cd, configured everything then rebooted. File either didn't save or it isn't being accessed. After five reboots and five redo configurations I decided to register on here and see if anyone knew what stupid thing I'm forgetting to do. Any ideas?

Re: LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.
I appreciate all the views. I'm going to test this on another machine to see if I have a USB problem. Given my complaining about the usb booting I'm sure I could stand to eliminate a usb connection problem. The usb drive has an led on it that shows activity which is why I didn't give it a strong thought. Will update once I've tested the combination on another machine.

Re: LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.
Perhaps you can save config on USB Key From LiveCd , but the problem is to LOAD USB config from USB when reboot.
Please read this post, perhaps helps you, but I doubt that you can boot from CD and load config from USB (you need to modify files on live CD).

PD: The more obvious sollution is that you use a IDE or a SATA cheap old disk to install Full Nas4Free install.

Re: LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.
True, went with an old 80g IDE drive for a boot disc and did a full install. I was just hoping that the liveCD option would work with the usb load of the config since it would be a quick and easy for several old boxes of mine. Don't have that many old drives lying around. I'm still going to find the time to test that solution on another box once I've got this one running. My backup needs are greater than my desire to test at the moment. Thanks for the advice.

Re: LiveCD not saving config file on USB drive.
saving just the config on older hardware USB ports
or the embedded on almost as old
some older hardware, bios, and usb does not work with larger USB memory
at least until the OS driver has taken over the port, some not even then
try a 512 Mb USB stick formatted fat 16, if you can find one.
what I did quite successfully on the old hardware with the crap USB ports was
to use a 2.1 Gb Hdd from a junked xerographic printer, with a 44 to 40 pin adapter.
with embedded, the drive can be installed and set to spin down after 5 minutes.
[no mount point necessary]
I consider this the best cheap option for old hardware without good USB
see it here

All 3 below use industrial grade SATA or PATA flash drives
despite only the last will not boot USB and will not save config to large USB

512 Mb @ under $20.
