Not possible to start/install from Live-CD

Post by M*I*B »

Greetings from Germany,

Yesterday, the stick with the operating system said goodbye to the silicon heaven. Therefore, I am forced to reinstall the system. For this purpose, I have downloaded the current image and burned to a CD ... But it does not work!
The NAS crashes right at the start when it boots with a "BTX halted". A second CD with the previous version shows the same behavior. Only an ancient "NAS4FREE" boots correctly, as well as a Knoppix, a Debian and an Ubuntu live medium...

Can someone please explain to me, what's going on here?!?

Is there a way to do the installation in a different way here?

more info is needed.

what program do you use to burn ISO image?.

what machine is the boot machine?.

as workarround, boot CD on your desktop PC and do the embeded install on a new USB on this desktop PC, once done, you can use this USB, to boot your NAS normally and this can determine if your CD is good or not.

I use ImgBurn to toast. I also have try Ashampoo on the 2nd try with the former version. Meanwhile I have toast a right now downloaded Knoppix with the same machine/burner/ImgBurn I use for the LiveCD... The NAS can boot from it without problems. Must be a problem of the LiveCD itself resp. the Bootloader in konjunktion with the mainboard/hardware. Remember: An very old NAS4FREE-CD boots also without problems...

The NAS ist running on a "Supermicro X10SLL-F" Mainboard with a XEON and 64GB-ECC. The CDR ist connected directly to Onboard SATA-0 due the 12 Slots are using SAS- controller. Need more Info? Let me know...

Ok, I will try the Workarround you have decribed...

... I will give it a try in the near future ...
Meanwhile I have use the old CD tu bring it to run and update it out of the GUI. That works well at the moment...

What is the difference between other methodes and "ZFSonRoot"?

is the best boot method.

have the advantages of a full install ( you can add packaes), but it's possible to update from webGUI like embeded.

and you can manage dataset ( boot upgrades), so you can easyly revert a new upgrade if somethings goes wrong.

... ty a lot; good to know for the future ...

Meanwhile I have update the Board-BIOS to the latest. But that don't solve it. I also have noticed that the Version/Image I can boot from without crash is'nt not so old as expected; is from last year... So meanwhile the old version and the last two new images must be have a difference inside the code of the bootloader that create the HALT problem; there must be some changed ...

sorry to ear , but keep in mind that is not a XigmaNAS problem, perhaps it's a BSD 12.x problem, but i don't know.

... yes, you are right ... Maybe ;o)
The question is: Has only changed the NAS software / firmware since last year or even the underlying OS?!?

I have noticed that booting has become a real pain on newer motherboards. And so I now inage my USB drives I run from on an old BIOS based laptop that just runs and works every time. Since I install a lot of these systems for clients, I just set up a dozen at a time and go. Works fantastic and saves me headaches. (Other than getting the systems to boot from that USB stick, but I only do that once!)
