Can't install from LiveCD -wild pointer Panic error?

Post by eagle3000 »

Trying to build a PC with XigmaNAS, so added an Internal
4-port-SATA-PCI-1x card. (Run out of motherboard SATA ports.)
The CD Rom drive is connected here, to this add-on-card.
When booting the XigmaNAS LiveCD, it does not do much at all.
I get:

Looking up /BOOT/LOADER....Found
Relocating the loader and the BTX
Starting the BTX loader

BTX Loader 1.00 BTX Version is 1.02
Consoles : internal video/keyboard
BIOS CD is cd0
BIOS drive
(list all drives)
BIOS NUMBERkB/NUMBERkb available memory

FReeBSD/x86 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.1
panic: zfree(0x79e998e0,8224): wild pointer
--> Press a key on the console to reboot <--

What is wrong here?
Pressing a key just reboots only to stop at the same place.

is easy to boot from USB, why use liveCD instead LiveUSB?
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks for the tip raulfg3. I totally forgot we have this option. I have now downloaded it. It's an image file. I assume I would use something like YUMI to load it into a USB drive?

Can you tell me then, this 4-SATA-Port-add-on card is just not going to work? I was hoping to add a couple more Hard Drives to the XigmaNAS server with it.

This thread need for more Software/Hardware information, PCI product brand/model etc.

However, just to let you know, you can always disconnection the drives from the onboard SATA ports, temporary connect the CD-ROM there and boot the LiveMedia and install to the target disk.

Booting from budget PCIe cards does not always works.

I use Rufus https://rufus.ie/ to write image on USB

unplug pointing device?
it is not even necessary to install the XigmaNAS using the target computer.
any handy [64 bit] desktop will do, caution unplug the existing hdd/ssd to avoid any big oops.
also the CD/DVD drive might have work plugged into the mobo rather than the expansion card.
and lastly lots of bad/old/dusty optical drives. what seams to work for movies and music
does not for an install. missing a few bits here and there works for entertainment, not for installing

will the expansion card work for added drives? may-be ....try it

most should but lots of us old duffers remember the win-modem
by using this free advise, you, your heirs, etc
absolve, save, and hold harmless the advisor.
CAVEAT EMPTOR
YMMV
