HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL Need How to

Post by Amr.El-Awwam »

hi
i have the following setup:
1- MB Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2p
2- P i5-3450
3- 8GB RAM
4- 2 D-Link NIC (+1 Onboard)
5- HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL
6- 8*3TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001
7- USB with nas4free 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 306)
8- I did update HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL Firmware to 1.5

I did use nas4free with just 4 HDD ST3000DM001 using the build in 4 SATA port on the MB and it was working fine. Then i bought another 4 ST3000DM001 and the HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL. Now i need to know how to setup the 2720SGL RAID so that nas4free can use the 8 HDD .
I also removed all the previous configuration from nas4free but cant see any HDD after i moved all 8 drives to the RAID card .

Googled around and i think it is something to do with the driver .

I need help 1st setting up the 2720SGL so it delivers the HDD to nas4free 2nd installing the driver in nas4free if needed

PS ZFS is my main reason i don't want to use the card as RAID

Amr,

I too have the 2720 card, though I am not running 9.1 yet (gonna try soon). This card is not yet supported by N4F. It shows that FreeBSD 9.0 CURRENT does, but N4F is built on FreeBSD 9.0 RELEASE.

I have found some links to this on Google referencing how FreeNAS 8 is doing it, but I couldn't get it to work.

I think we are going to have to wait till more drivers are supported.

It's not need to wait. Just install 9.1.0.1.431 and add the line to /cf/boot/loader.conf:

Code: Select all

hpt27xx_load="YES"
If you install as embedded, edit /cf/boot/loader.conf from Advanced|File Editor in WebGUI.
If you install as full, edit /boot/loader.conf instead.

@Daoyama,

This is great news. Sadly though I have no more SATA ports, hence the need for the card, and most important no more places to leave a HD in the case. Any chance I can get this working on Embedded?

I am thinking of running full install on a CF card even though it is not recommended just so I can get this card running as well as MySQL. Thoughts?

Sorry to jump onto this old(ish) thread.

I am new to NAS4FREE - I haven't used any previous iterations/projects (FREENAS) either. I have the same RAID Controller 2720SGL Non-RAID and I am trying to setup a 24TB system using it, our first proper build since running some small test rigs on old hardware (which went fine using on-board NIC and SATA controller). I am already running 9.1.0.1.431 but this card refuses to work (after having done the above). I have read online that the card only supports i386 and amd64. Does anyone know if this is true? Will my i5 system not work with this card?

The important sections of dmesg are:

hpt27xx: RocketRAID 27xx controller driver v1.0 (Oct 8 2012 03:57:05)
hpt27xx0: <odin> mem 0xf7e40000-0xf7e5ffff,0xf7e00000-0xf7e3ffff irq 16 at device 0.0 on pci1
hpt27xx: adapter at PCI 1:0:0, IRQ 16
hpt27xx: Failed to verify controller
hpt27xx0: [GIANT-LOCKED]

Followed by 255 incremented versions of:

(probe0:hpt27xx0:0:0:0): INQUIRY. CDB: 12 0 0 0 24 0
(probe0:hpt27xx0:0:0:0): CAM status: Invalid Target ID

I bought this card specifically after Googling NAS4FREE and the model number and finding systems running it.

Is there an easy way to have this card work - or if not could someone suggest a reasonable priced PCI-e controller that will work straight out the box - I'm planning on using ZFS mirrors and don't need RAID on the card - I just need to be able to add 8 drives (and to be cheeky a uk based link to purchase it)?

thanks in advance.

@motionlab,

I installed my 2720 card last night on embedded .431 by adding the driver per Aoyama. I am seeing the same type of error with 255 increments. BUT, I did get the card to work. I attached a drive (previously formatted UFS) and performed a "Clear Config & Import" under Disk Management and it imported. See the photo. It imported as "da0"

I need more time to toy with it though. I am hoping to learn more tonight after work. I will post any progress I make.

Also, I have amd arch, but here is a compatibility link. Looks like i5 is supported.

Did you flash your 2720 to use non-RAID BIOS?

Apologies for not replying sooner, notification must have been buried in my email.

I bought a specific Non-RAID Card, so assumed it had the Non-RAID already installed. I certainly had no RAID options in the BIOS.

Truth is I was in a hurry, this was needed for production quickly and I had already spent more time than I could afford so I chickened out and used Ubuntu Server with Ubuntu-zfs, samba and netatalk.

I will be keeping my eye on NAS4FREE and maybe try again when I need another NAS in the building.

But the reliance on FreeBSD for drivers hit me. First with on-board NIC not being recognised, then with RAID Controller. You can waste hours investigating hardware before purchase and still get it wrong! And if parts come mail order, days could be wasted in-between.

We may yet build a NAS control panel in PHP to combine administration of Ubuntu-ZFS, Netatalk and Samba (or at least the thought crossed my mind)... if I ever get bored with administering via CLI and Webmin.

Finally getting around to picking this back up in case anyone is still reading.

I was using (1) drive (formatted UFS) connected to the RR2720 SAS Controller for some time now. Didn't have any problems. This weekend I unplugged the (1) drive and swapped it for the (3) drives that made up my old ZFS Pool (RAIDZ1). Under Disk Management I performed an "Import" then did a Sycnronize under ZFS and I was back in business with no loss of data in the pool.

What I have seen so far. For some reason these disks are daX rather then adX? Also it seems any drive attached the the 2720 Controller looses it's SMART ability?

Their are many different BIOS flashes out there. Can't seem to get the "Non-Raid" BIOS to flash that I DLed off the HighPoint website "R272x_non_RAID_BIOS_4.0.0.1808." Anyone have any luck with this?

I am thinking it may not work from my already Non-RAID v1.2 I have an idea or two to see if it pans out.

Ultimate goal is to get SMART working if possible

Flashed the RR2720 card again today. Flashed it to the RocketRAID 2720 v 1.5. Highpoint has changes their website, they now have a RocketRAID XX section for RAID capabilities and then just Rocket XX section for non-raid mode. I tried using the non-raid mode again after flashing to the RocketRaid v 1.5, but it won't allow me to flash using the non-RAID drivers off the website.

Interestingly enough now that the card is in RAID mode, it doesn't ask me to do the initializing like I had to do back with original firmware? My drives Imported just fine into N4F.

Still can't get SMART to work. Also I lost my serial numbers of the Hard Disks now in the GUI?

Also noticed now that I am using the updated firmware the boot screen seems a shorter delay and no output.

Hi,

I just got myself the highpoint rocketraid 2720 and was wondering the following:

if i setup a Raidz2 and then in the future one of the HDD's dies. i replace the faulty HDD, will the OS know that its been replaced? (cause the serial numbers dont show up in the UI)

Hi unkis17,

Since you have RocketRAID, can you please try the latest build that added more controller support for S.M.A.R.T. and report back in the forum ?
