NAS4Free 9.1.0.1.509 Released

Post by daoyama »

Please test with latest 9.1.0.1 before posting a bug.
Now 9.0 is mainly security bug fix.
If you are new to NAS4Free, starting from 9.1.0.1.xxx is recommended.

Thank you for your help.

Now you can import single disks, encypted disks and Software RAID disks from WebGUI.
If you want a fresh installation with existing formatted disks, try this feature.

Note that the mount point other than UFS and GPT-NTFS is not modified, you may need to re-create it.
Vinum of Software RAID is not yet supported.

New version have LiveUSB, it act as same as LiveCD.
You can install/upgrade NAS4Free without CD drive and network connectivity.
Also run as Live mode, it does not touch any existing HDDs until you specify.

This version contains VIA VT6421/VT6420 patched kernel.
If you have a trouble before with the cards, please try 273 or later.

This version contains vmxnet3 driver from ESXi5.1.
Now, you can test with VMXNET3 in VM.

Starting to support HAST (Highly Available Storage).
Now supports iSCSI target only. You cannot mix non-HAST volumes/sevices.
To use HAST, you must have same configured two NAS4Free servers.

Due to fixing a bug in the encryption, a pass phrase which contains
special characters, such as '&', may not work as previous version.
If you have a trouble, please change the phrase without special characters in old version,
then re-change it to the phrase you want in new version.

NEED UPGRADING: NAS4Free below 247 have big problems.
=====================================================
All version of NAS4Free below 247 have wrong input validations.
Due to this, any user can insert invalid characters to NAS4Free.
It's easy to destroy the system!

9.0.0.1.XXX(below 247) have wrong config conversion at boot.
It is failed until you touch "Access > Users and Groups".
Once the config is converted, it's impossible to recover.

To avoid a security risk, all the previous versions were deleted from SF.

NAS4Free 9.1.0.1.xxx is current developing version.
And it should be base version for future releases.

If your hardware is not compatible with 9.1, please use 9.0.0.1.249 or
higher instead until a problem is fixed.

Upgrading from FreeNAS server
=============================
This version supports upgrading from FreeNAS 0.7.2 or 0.7.5.
The supported lowest config version is 8.9. (0.7.2.5246)

Before 0.7.2.5246 is never supported in NAS4Free.
Also, restoring FreeNAS config is never supported.
The password in FreeNAS config is never changed.
If you want change it, use "3) Reset WebGUI Password" of Console setup.

x-86 is on the way? I do not see it :(
Change php to php-cgi
Fine. Not need run

Code: Select all

mv /usr/local/bin/php /usr/local/bin/php-cli
# cp /usr/local/bin/php-cgi /usr/local/bin/php
in case add module, and upgrade for full version will correct :!:

The main reason is
- bundle all FreeBSD drivers.
And we plan to add more tools, etc later.

As for me - not problem. In case embedded version:
1. Backup data, config and emergency partition
2. umount /cf
3 in case my CF dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada2 bs=512 count=1
4. gpart for new sizes, write bootcode, format partitions.
5. Copy content unzipped image to ada2s1a, backuped data and emergency.
6. reboot
7. restore config.

Did you use DHCP?
Try rebooting after set the LAN IF and IP address from console setup.
Some reason it might not work until rebooting.

I am attempting install on a blank jail - but the release of 9.1-RC3 has broken pkg_add -r. Ugh. Also, today is pretty busy.
May be only broken link with packages. Can help :

Code: Select all

setenv PACKAGESITE=ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/amd64/packages-9-current/Latest/
For i386 - all correct. As for me - work. Continue testing.
UPD. 14/11
Why then did not want to work Jail - had to reinstall. But now the startup script is shorter, and 2 jails work normal.

Re: NAS4Free 9.1.0.1.457 Released

Post by ChriZathens »

Friday afternoon my 16month-terrorist-son  was at his Grandmother, so I had 2-3 hours of me-time (to clean up my desk a bit, upgrade my n4f etc)
Since my n4f was in an old version (9.0.0.1.175), before live usb availability from the devs, I was using a rewritable cd to upgrade it.
So downloaded the iso, burnt the cd, but also downloaded the liveusb img file in order to try for the first time.
I inserted the usb stick, configured system to boot from it, boot process started but it would not pass "Loading opensolaris.ko"
I used Win32 Disk Imager to write the img to usb. The first time I wrote it, it run from an 64bit win7 machine and threw an error at the beginning, but then wrote it normally.
I thought that perhaps something went wrong because of the error that popped at the beginning, so turned on my win7 32bit laptop and wrote again the usb (no error this time)
Tried to boot again, but it still wouldn't pass "Loading opensolaris.ko"
I tried 3rd time, using a different usb stick this time, but still the same... Booting stopped at "Loading opensolaris.ko" again!!!!
Anyways, I finally used the cd rom and booted normally, installed .457 just fine and all is great..
But why did I have this problem with usb?
( I would really prefer to use a usb stick to upgrade, so that I can get rid of my dvd drive...)
Is it perhaps win32 disk Imager the problem? What software should I use in order to pass full installation version to usb?

http://www.freebsd.org/news/2012-compromise.html

For security reason, if you add the packages by pkg_add between 19th September 2012 and 11th November 2012,
it is strongly recommended to remove all packages and delete all jail hosts and
install NAS4Free 9.1.0.1.509 as fresh install.

If you don't install any extensions nor use jail, don't worry about it.
However, upgrading to 509 is recommended, of course.

Note that the zfskerntune does not use 3rd-party packages, it's safe to use anytime.

This is not so easy story. If you set wrong parameters and never boot NAS4Free,
You can't recover by overwriting new one.
Currently always reset to default loader.conf when upgrdaing. So you can re-upgrade it to non-bootable NAS4Free.

At this time, there is noway to keep cuurent setting or drop it at upgrading.
It is easy to integrate zfskerntune, but keep the setting is hard.

Just used the LiveUSB method to upgrade to .509...
Thanks again zoon1 for recommending physdiskwrite.. It seems it did the job properly.. ;) Next time I find some free time, I will get rid of the DVDRom drive!
I just want to mention that loading opensolaris.ko while booting from the USB took abnormally long time (almost 10 minutes..)
There is still one problem, though... Quixplorer does not show Greek correctly.. Perhaps devs have not seen my report yet..
Please see following post for more info: viewtopic.php?p=8128#p8128

I can't confirm this. Always shows as UTF-8.
I'm using Firefox 17.0 and Chrome 23.

Does any one confirm this?

Even if I change the default character encoding setting in firefox, that page still shows as iso8859-7
I have tried in my home's computer, my work's computer, my work's laptop, my android phone and a colleague's computer..
Using Firefox 16.0.2, Internet explorer 6,7,8,9
In all of them Greek in file manager display as hieroglyphics
BUT I just realized that if I change n4f language to Greek and then login to file manager, file manager displays correctly.
I don't use the Greek language in n4f webui, in fact I prefer English in all my devices. I was just selecting Greek in file manager in order to identify any errors in the translation...
So, to sum up:
If I have English in n4f webui and select Greek for the file manager, then file manager shows hieroglyphics instead of Greek..
If I have Greek in n4f webui and use Greek (detected) in file manager, then file manager displays Greek correctly.
So it seems to me that file manager html encoding is inherited from N4F webui encoding... While it does make sense, is it possible to alter this behavior and force file manager pages to display according to the encoding set in its lang files ??

What changed ?

When I update from 431 to 467 or 509 the connection from Windows XP doesn't work anymore.
When I downgrade to 431 again it works again.

Any tip ?

I don't know what related. Big change is:

Samba is upgrade to 3.6.9.
LDAP host is changed to using URI.

Try to reboot windows.
Try to check with LiveCD/USB whether CIFS works or not.

Thanks,

This didn't help (tried also new 531). I tried a reconnect the Cifs share with Windows Explorer, but he didn't find the CIFS-share. The services overview shows CIFS/Sama up and running.

Hi all,
I just tried to access to the web interface from an Android tablet.
With the standard browser (ICS 4.0.3) I can use the interface with no big problem.
But with Firefox (v. 17.0) I was never able to select a menu. A short press jump to status page, a long press get the Firefox menu.
I think that is something to repair short term because now it's common to use tablets also for this kind of work!
